Parking ticket helps nab antique robber

Police have arrested one of the two men they believe
are responsible for the armed robbery of the Antique Gallery last
week. A parking ticket led police to the Center City home of Alix
Toussaint on Aug. 27, said Cpl. James Pauley of the department's
Public Affairs unit.
Earlier that day, the Antique Gallery at 8523 Germantown
Ave. had fallen victim to armed robbery shortly before 11 a.m.
when two men, posing as construction workers, looted jewelry and
silver estimated at $200,000, police said. It was the second such
crime in 15 months.

CHC readies for men’s soccer debut

For the 2003-‘04 academic year, its first as a co-ed
school, Chestnut Hill College introduced men’s basketball as its
initial intercollegiate sport for male athletes. This fall, men’s
soccer has been accorded the same status, after functioning strictly
as a club team in 2003.
The Griffin booters will play in the newly-formed North
Eastern Athletic Conference, which consists primarily of NCAA Division
III colleges in eastern Pennsylvania and southern New York State.

Culture shock in Syria for Chestnut Hill teacher

Chestnut Hill resident Betsy O’Neil,
36, is a 1985 graduate of Springside School and a 1989 graduate
of Barnard College with a degree in political science. A math
teacher at Penn Charter Middle School, she was granted a leave
of absence until December so that she could move to Damascus,
Syria, where she is currently teaching English and studying
Arabic. Following is an e-mail report she sent to the Local.
I can get fixated on one or two ideas before I
leave for a trip. I’m embarrassed to admit it, but this
