CHC readies for men’s soccer debut

by TOM UTESCHER

For the 2003-‘04 academic year, its first as a co-ed school, Chestnut Hill College introduced men’s basketball as its initial intercollegiate sport for male athletes. This fall, men’s soccer has been accorded the same status, after functioning strictly as a club team in 2003.

The Griffin booters will play in the newly-formed North Eastern Athletic Conference, which consists primarily of NCAA Division III colleges in eastern Pennsylvania and southern New York State.

CHA summer booters edged by North, 2-1

In addition to playing for their various club teams this summer, Chestnut Hill Academy soccer players have joined together to play as a unit in the Northeast Philadelphia American Legion Summer Soccer League.

In last Sunday’s action, North Catholic High School scored once on the Blue Devils in each of the 25-minute halves, and the Falcons emerged with a 2-1 victory after CHA converted a penalty kick with under nine minutes remaining. Even though the games are nine-on-nine contests, Chestnut Hill had only one sub for the bout, and the Devils slipped to 1-2 in the league with the setback against the more numerous North Catholic booters.

CHA’s roster included eight returning players: seniors Gabe Eldred, Andrew Ferry, Scott Redpath, Dan Shuptar and Pat Spanninger, juniors Mike Griffin and Frank Spada, and sophomore Brent Campman. John Mitchell, a junior transfer from Upper Dublin High School, also played, and to give the Devils at least one reserve, Spanninger recruited his younger brother, Shane.

Mount hockey hopes high, with good reason

Finishing third in District I and making it to the quarterfinals of the PIAA Class AAA state tournament, the 2003 Magic produced the best results of any team in Mount St. Joseph Academy field hockey history. Although the team graduated its starting goalie and six other players from last year (four who saw action regularly), the Mount was a very deep squad and returns a host of talented players for the 2004 campaign.

Mount volleyball rebuilding

The story of Mount St. Joseph Academy’s 2004 volleyball season will center around how well the Magic can cope with significant losses both on the court and on the sidelines. Five players and a veteran coach from the Mount’s 2003 team have moved on to college.

Head Coach Sandy Butcher is back for his ninth season at the Mount, but longtime assistant Mark Magarity has departed to become the mentor of the spike squad at Philadelphia University. Butcher’s new assistant is Jen Moran, who played at the collegiate level at Kings University. She was also an assistant coach for the MSJ softball team this spring.
