GFS, Charter booters settle for standoff

by TOM UTESCHER

On their shortest “road trip” of the season, Penn Charter’s soccer players strolled a few hundred yards along School House Lane last Friday to take on the Tigers of Germantown Friends School.

GFS junior Mbizo Mzamane got the hosts on the board just over three minutes into the second half, and senior Pat Farrell tied it for the Quakers less than six minutes later. Forgoing overtime play in the non-league bout, the squads settled for a 1-1 draw that left the Tigers with a 1-0-2 mark in the young season, while PC’s record was 0-2-1.

Penn Charter coach Leighton Walters has reason to hope for better things down the road, since the Quakers only graduated two impact players and have some talented young additions in sophomore Tim Drabyak and freshmen Connor Gorman and Torrey Crawford. Farrell, a heavily recruited sweeper, is a co-captain of the team, along with Steve Sullivan, also a senior.

Germantown, in contrast, is in full rebuilding mode after reaching...

CHC spikers clawed by Cougars

by TOM UTESCHER

The visiting Cougars of College Misericordia spoiled Chestnut Hill College’s home volleyball debut last Tuesday evening, knocking off the Griffins in straight games, 30-22, 30-19, 30-19.

Chestnut Hill is searching for some continuity at the helm of the team, as this fall the Griffins greeted a new head coach for the third year in a row. Their latest mentor is Matt Kerr, who was formerly an assistant coach at Neshaminy High School. He also gained experience in the sport while serving as the manager and team assistant for the women’s volleyball squad at Temple University.

In the opening game of Tuesday’s tilt, Misericordia stepped out to a 4-0 lead and the Griffins were forced to play catch-up, pulling even at 8-8 on one of a dozen Cougar errors in the game. The visitors went ahead again, but once more the locals leveled the count, 15-all, on a hit by senior Jen Banks. Thanks to a pair of unreturned serves by fellow senior...

GFS dedicates new field house

by TOM UTESCHER

Normally quiet on a Sunday, the Germantown Friends School campus was abuzz on the afternoon of September 12, when students, parents, faculty and other supporters gathered for the official dedication of the school’s new field house. Before the ribbon-cutting ceremony, children romped through a series of informal games and other activities in the 17,100 square-foot building, which is located at the corner of Green Street and School House Lane.

The erection of such a structure had been discussed in strategic planning sessions at GFS as far back as 1978. The builder, Turner Special Projects, began construction in June of 2003. Intended to blend aesthetically with surrounding buildings, the new edifice was designed by the firm of Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, which was also the architect of the recently-opened Liberty Bell Pavilion on Independence Mall.

The new facility is geared towards the school’s in-house physical education

Mount is loaded up for ‘04 golf campaign

by TOM UTESCHER

Although the remnants of “Frances” curtailed their activities somewhat last week, the golfers of Mount St. Joseph Academy are off to a promising start this season.

Their lone setback thus far occurred in a scrimmage with the boys’ team from Lansdale Catholic, and against their own gender the Magic have posted easy victories over Villa Joseph Marie (269-384) and Nazareth (243-320).

The Athletic Association of Catholic Academies field has expanded from five teams to seven this fall, but with all but two members of last year’s squad returning, the Mount is well-equipped to defend its 2003 championship.

Both current senior Nicole Kouch and sophomore Victoria Arena fared well in postseason play last autumn. Finishing sixth in District 1, Kouch was just one place...

Mount booters bow to Basil’s in OT

by Tom Utescher

A goal in the 11th minute of sudden-death overtime carried visiting St. Basil’s to a 2-1 soccer victory at Mount St. Joseph Academy last Tuesday afternoon.

Jen Fedyna scored for the hosts in the first half, then the Panthers tied the match ten minutes into the second period of regulation play. It was the Catholic Academies opener for both squads and the 2004 home debut for the Mount, which had split a pair of games at the Upper Perkiomen tournament four days earlier.

Through most of the first period last Tuesday the Magic took the play to Basil’s. In front of the cage Teresa Fulton just missed getting a foot on a fine cross by Aubrey Barrett from the right wing, and a shot by Fedyna from the middle of the box went wide to the left. A long ball by Caitlin Sullivan was saved by visiting goalie Chrissy Powell, and later Mary Fannon’s hard outside shot struck the crossbar of the Panthers’ cage.

Mount St. Joe broke the ice with 11:20 remaining in the opening half, when Fedyna made a solo rush, dribbling the ball over the 18 and between a pair of Panther backs...
