Woodmere expansion to be subject of special zoning
board hearing
by JAMES STURDIVANT
Resolution of the controversy over expansion plans
at the Woodmere Art Museum was put off for at least another two
weeks as the Philadelphia Zoning Board of Adjustment decided at
its Oct. 13 meeting to grant a continuance in order to hold a special
hearing on the matter.
ZBA chairman David L. Auspitz decided a hearing was
needed after lawyers from both sides indicated that they would
call multiple witnesses in what has become a protracted fight between
some near neighbors and the museum over plans to build a two-story
addition. A date and time for the special hearing had not been
announced by press time.
S. David Fineman, lawyer for the soon-to-be-incorporated
North Chestnut Hill Neighbors Association, initially requested
a continuance based on what he termed a “posting problem,” saying
that the museum had not posted notice of the Oct. 13 meeting until
a few days before and that the information provided was incorrect.
Peter Kelsen, lawyer for the museum, countered that “extensive
discussions” and a large number of CHCA-hosted public hearings...

CHYSC U-14 Intramural League Results

Tottenham striker, Reuben Hampton, stood out this past
weekend in the Chestnut Hill Youth Sports Club U-14 intramural league,
scoring the lone goal for Tottenham in Saturday's contest in the last
three minutes to knot the game with Liverpool at 1-1, and getting a hat
trick plus one to lead Tottenham over Arsenal 5-1 on Sunday. Victoria
Horn also scored for Tottenham. The victory and tie for Tottenham launched
the club into first place in the U-14 league, just one point higher than
the Bolton Wanderers who only played once over the weekend.
In Sunday's U-14 game between Liverpool and the Bolton
Wanderers, Liverpool was set on scoring early. Five minutes into the
game Liverpool's Isaac Roberts kicked a corner kick that curved into
the goal, defying the goalie's efforts at reaching for it. Numerous goal
shots and attempts to score were taken by Bolton Wanderers' potent offense
led by Zandy and Nick Schreiber, Drew Adabatu and the Harris brothers,
Crosby and John. However, they were denied by Liverpool fullback, Jared
Kornfeld, and goalie, Joe Killian, enough times to prevent Bolton from
taking the lead.
Ten minutes after the first goal, Isaac Roberts received
a pass from Zack King and scored another goal. This one was kicked so
hard that the goalie could not hold onto it. Liverpool's Joel Fagliano
attempted to score on a number of occasions but the Bolton Wanderers'
goalie, Max Cavelli, held fast.
The second half saw the Bolton scoring two hard fought
goals. Liverpool's halfbacks, Nick Dekker...

'Diva' learned art from
blind children
Hill painter/author a 'goddess to be worshipped'
By MARIE FOWLER
"I grew up at the foot of an easel," confesses
artist, author and educator Susan Rodriguez. "I have been
an artist my entire life. There was never a question about it.
It's a genetic mutation," laughs the Chestnut Hill resident
(since 1976), a third-generation painter. And if the dramatic,
demonstrative Rodriguez weren't an artist, she would surely be
an actress, a diva! From the silk fringe sweeping through the air
at her wrists to the sparkling chandelier earrings that are constantly
in motion, her very presence is performance art.
Rodriguez's current one-man show, Stealing Water
from the Moon, is an intriguing selection of pastel collages, prints,
scrolls and ceramics, on view at the Indigo Arts Gallery in Old
City through October 31. The artist took the show's title from
a "Zen saying about the quest for the unattainable - which
I believe essential to the creation of one's art."
"I was born over a dress shop on Ogontz Avenue," Rodriguez
says. "I went to a Quaker school, but I never knew what to
put in the box where you check off your religion. Undecided? I
was raised in a very Socialist...
