Swept along by the hot scoring hand of freshman Katie Reinprecht, Mount St. Joseph Academy won the field hockey championship in the Athletic Association of Catholic Academies for the first time since 2000.

Reinprecht, a member of the United States Under-16 Team, scored three goals in Wednesday's playoff semifinal to help the Magic stop Sacred Heart, 5-1, then two days later the freshman shot the lone goal of the championship game as top-seeded MSJ took the title over number three Merion Mercy.

The 1-0 victory allowed the Mount to end its 2004 league...

CHA tops PC in soggy soccer match

by TOM UTESCHER

On a damp Tuesday last week the Chestnut Hill Academy-Penn Charter game was the only Inter-Ac soccer match that took place as scheduled, partly because the Blue Devils and Quakers each needed a league victory so badly.

Sitting in fourth place going into the match, host CHA rang up a 4-1 win, leveling its Inter-Ac record at 2-2 (for six points in the standings) and keeping faint hopes of a league championship alive. PC remained in last place at 0-4 (2-9-1 overall), and even if the Quakers were to win their last six Inter-Ac contests, the resulting 18 points would only produce a title if a string of miracles occurred.

The previous Friday, Chestnut Hill had not only lost a league game to Haverford, it also lost the services of two starters. Senior captain Pat Spanninger received a red-card suspension...

Penn State Berks beats CHC spikers

by TOM UTESCHER

Last Tuesday night's volleyball bout at Chestnut Hill College pitted the Griffins against another squad that has been struggling below the .500 mark for much of the season, Penn State Berks County.

With extended rallies on many of the points, the match ran longer than many five-game affairs, but in the end the visiting Lady Lions won it in four rounds, 3-1. Visiting PSB improved to 4-11 on the season, while Chestnut Hill slipped to 8-18.

The opening game set the tone for the hard-fought match. Midway through, Chestnut Hill held a 15-12 edge, receiving three kills by Christine Corbo and two by Patricia Dewey, and a hit and a block by Jen...

Monarchs oust Mount from tennis throne, 3-2

by TOM UTESCHER

Avenging a pair of regular-season losses to their Mount St. Joseph Academy counterparts, Gwynedd Mercy's Gabrielle Cappelli and Samantha Grosse prevailed in three sets at second doubles in the Athletic Association of Catholic Academies championship match last Friday.

The final had been tied at 2-2, and the doubles victory put the Monarchs over the top, ending a four-year reign as champ by the Mount Magic.

The regular season champion with a 10-0 record, Mount St. Joe defeated Nazareth, 5-0, in the semifinal round of the playoffs, while in the other semi second-seeded Gwynedd (8-2 regular season) defeated St. Basil's to reach the championship match.

In each of their two previous meetings with...
