Irwin excursion goes awry for Springside

by TOM UTESCHER

Springside School’s field hockey and soccer teams traveled to Agnes Irwin last Thursday to make up games that had been rained out earlier in the month, and with unfavorable outcomes in both events, the ride home was a long one for the Lions.

The hockey match was a scrappy but scoreless affair most of the way, but just as it seemed overtime was in the offing, Irwin scored on a penalty corner with less than two minutes remaining to capture a 1-0 victory. Just down the hill on the soccer pitch, the Lions were first on the scoreboard, but after that the host Owls swooped down on the Springside net, filling it with half-a-dozen goals for a 6-1 final.

Both the Springside and Irwin hockey teams are well-stocked with seniors who had playoff aspirations at the start of the year, but who got off to an 0-2 start in the Girls Inter-Ac League.

In Thursday’s scramble for that first league victory, the Owls attacked at the outset for about seven minutes, then the Lions took the play to the other end and had Rachel Estepa fire a ball just wide of the left post. Later on, Springside took three straight corners, but they didn’t yield any shots, and the score was still 0-0 at halftime.
