Letters Help needed The Germantown Women's Y, located at 5820 Germantown Avenue, needs your help. The new board that took over last year, spearheaded by their president Jennifer Levy and the Y's director Merrie Baldus, have worked tirelessly to save the Y from closing. However, at the end of August 2004, due to many setbacks, they had to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. This action will give them more time to raise the needed money to pay back salaries and fix, repair, restore or replace the many problems reported at the main Y. The Germantown Women's Y is certainly an important part of our community. However the community has been silent in coming to the aid of this wonderful organization. The Germantown Women's Y needs your financial help now. If everyone who read this letter would send a contribution, it would start them on their way to reaching their financial goals. If every church in the area would take up a special offering for the Y this too could start the ball rolling. Also if the politicians, businessmen and unions would lend a hand this could happen. We are also looking for talented volunteers to do a variety of work, from help with childcare to glazing windows in the gym for weatherproofing. Everyone knows that the Germantown Women's Y has made an important impact on all of us in Northwest Philadelphia over the years. Please don't let the hard work of the new board be in vain. The director of the Y has been praying for a miracle. Lets be a part of that miracle. Bring or send all contributions to: Germantown Women's Y, 5820 Germantown Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19144. Call the Y at 215-438-6266 for more information. The board of directors of the Germantown Women's Y Many thanks To all those friends and interested members of the community who donated to -- and those who shopped at -- our garage sale at 6812 McCallum St. on Oct. 23, we would like to say thank you. Because of you, it was a huge success and we cleared $1,000, which is going today to African Great Lakes Initiative. Please look for us in the spring. We will be doing this again. Thank you so much. Louise Barteau and Barbara Wybar Event a success The board of directors of Wissahickon Skating Club would like to thank the generous supporters of the first annual Golf Classic held on Oct. 14. The proceeds from the event will be used for the restoration of the building. Anyone who has driven by the rink during the day will notice that the work has already begun. The front windows are in the process of being repaired and repainted and the results are dramatic. In addition to golf at Pine Crest Country Club, the golfers were entertained by both a silent and Chinese Auction. The community was generous in providing exciting items. Many of the items were associated with hockey from the Wissahickon Pro Shop, Wave One Sports, Hockey Heaven, Easton Sports and Colgate University Hockey program. Retailers on Germantown Avenue and beyond provided donations which enticed all the golfers to bid, such as Healthworld, Inc., Bob Zatzman, Action Karate, Carman's Shoe Repair, Imagery Photography and the Morris Arboretum. The golfers had the following choices of area restaurants to bid on: McNally's, Cafette, Baker Street, CinCin, Solaris, Starbucks, Omaha Steaks, The Melting Pot and The Blue Bell Inn. The golf committee, headed by Christian Gingras, Deborah McCreery, Gerald D. Quill, Sue G. Dougherty, Vince Dunne and Johnathan Gingras, would like to thank their sponsors of the WSC Golf Classic for their support: Widerman & Company, Ms. Write Stationery, Moreland Development, LLC, The Crafty Veteran, Rubicon Wealth Management, The WSC Pee Wee A Parents, Charming Shoppes, Vasoli Electric, Sloane Automotive Group, Philadelphia Insurance Companies and Cowan Auto.
