She's going for it.
In an interview with the Local last Friday, State Rep. LeAnna Washington confirmed her candidacy for the 4th District State Senate seat being vacated by Allyson Schwartz, who won election to the U.S. House of Representatives in last week's general election.
Cindy Bass, senior policy advisor to U.S. Rep. Chaka Fattah, also declared her candidacy to the newspaper in an interview on Monday.
Washington, who won a sixth term as representative of the 200th House District in an unopposed race on Nov. 2, has emerged as the favored frontrunner in a group of rumored Senate hopefuls that include Ruth Damsker, a Montgomery County commissioner, and State Rep. Mount hockey headed for state tournament

by TOM UTESCHER
After losing a District One field hockey quarterfinal match on October 29, Mount St. Joseph Academy took advantage of its last chance to snag a spot in the Class AAA state tournament, winning an overtime consolation game last Tuesday, 2-1, over Upper Perkiomen High School.
The Magic (23-2), the third seeded in the district tourney, fell behind the sixth-seeded Indians on a penalty stroke, but Sarah Reinprecht evened it up for the Mount in the second half and her younger sister Katie shot the gamewinner with 2:13 remaining in a 15-minute, sudden victory overtime session. For the Mount's juniors and seniors, the victory avenged a 2002 loss to Upper Perk, who had knocked off the Magic in a consolation contest to quash the locals' hopes for their first appearance in the state tourney.
Assured of one of the six spots reserved for District One teams at States, the Mount took the field again on Friday in a game to determine the fifth and sixth seeds. MSJ wound up number five thanks to a 1-0 win over Council Rock South.
Since Tuesday's contest against Upper Perk was played on newly-installed...

Paulo Faustini is the grapest
opera singer in Chestnut Hill
By LEN LEAR
Paulo Faustini, 40, was brought up to sing in church, almost from the day he was born. His late mother was a piano teacher and church musician, and his father is a retired Presbyterian minister and composer of church music. So it was no surprise when Paulo went off to Westminster Choir College in Princeton, N.J., on a scholarship and earned a bachelor's degree in church music and a master's in voice performance and pedagogy.
But Faustini, who sings every Sunday at the 9 a.m. service and 11:15 a.m. service at the Church of St. Martin in the Fields in Chestnut Hill, also has grape expectations. In addition to his acknowledged musical talent (Paulo has sung at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and other major venues under the direction of some of the world's greatest conductors such as Kurt Masur, Zubin Mehta and the late Leonard Bernstein), Faustini is just as passionate about his wine business, CIAO!
The company, run by Faustini and his partner, Lisa Smith, goes to people's homes or to BYOB restaurants to conduct wine tastings and wine education classes. For example, a recent event took place at a BYOB near South Street. There was a one-hour class from 6 to 7, and at 7 the 15 participants ordered dinner. During the first hour Paulo and Lisa offered five different wines for tasting and explained how to savor the intensity and complexity in the wines, swirling them around in the mouth with close-eyed concentration so...
