O'Reilly latest Lion to join Georgetown
by TOM UTESCHER
At this time last year, Springside School's high-scoring Zan Morley signed a scholarship agreement to play lacrosse at Georgetown University. Over the summer, 2003 Springside grad Maggie Koch transferred into Georgetown from Drexel University, where she started in goal during her freshman season last spring.
Early this month, a third Lion lacrosser became a Hoya when current senior Bunny O'Reilly signed up with the Washington, D.C. school. One of the national elite in the sport, Georgetown reached the NCAA semifinals last May before falling to eventual national champion Virginia.
An Honorable Mention All-American as a junior, O'Reilly plays third home on the attack, and performs a major role in the Lions' midfield transitions, as well. Last year she registered...
Mount basketball a veteran squad this year
by TOM UTESCHER
If the 2003-2004 basketball campaign did not quite live up to expectations for Mount St. Joseph Academy, the good news is that almost all of last year's athletes are back to have another crack at it this winter.
Champions of the Athletic Association of Catholic Academies and state quarterfinalists in 2002-2003, the Magic finished a disappointing 5-7 in league play last year (15-10 overall) and did not make the AACA playoffs.
There was only one upperclassman on the roster last winter, but this year the Magic are well-stocked with seniors. This includes the five returning starters, Emily Johnson (a four-year starter at point guard), guards Jen Fedyna and Katie Kerr, and forwards Alison Keane and Lauren Kummer. Teresa Fulton and Marybeth Schluckebier also represent the Class of '05, while the eighth senior, Katie Kohler, is slated for knee surgery in early January and will provide support from the sidelines.
Forward Abby Verica and guards Kate Hagedorn, Rebecca...
GA girls restocking for hoops campaign
by TOM UTESCHER
Although Germantown Academy's Girls Inter-Ac championship basketball squad suffered major gradation losses from the 2003-2004 season, last Friday's opening scrimmage indicated that the Patriots remain a force to be reckoned with in the region. The scoreboard was wiped clean at the end of each quarter in the game-situation scrimmage with visiting Archbishop Prendergast, but in the team totals for the afternoon GA easily outpointed the Pandas, 65-20.
The Pats graduated a strong group of players last spring, including 6'2" All-America guard Laura Kurz and veteran center/forward Lauren Freid. Swing player Becca Buckler was also a starter last winter, and a fourth member of the class of '04, Kate Johnston, was a reserve guard.
This leaves 6'1" junior Jenna Washabaugh as the only true post player for this year's team, but there are a number of athletes in other positions who measure in at close to six feet and can help under the boards. One of them is 5'11" Niki Finelli, who is a senior team co-captain this year along with...
