Episcopal pins down title at CHA Invitational

by TOM UTESCHER

More than a dozen teams turned up for last Saturday's Chestnut Hill Academy Wrestling Invitational Tournament, and when the mats were finally rolled up at the end of the event, Episcopal Academy had dethroned defending champ Wilmington Friends School to become the 2004 team champion.

Three weight class winners and four other finalists helped the Churchmen compile 210.5 points in the team standings, while Wilmington was runner-up with 136.5. Resting several wrestlers due to injury, host Chestnut Hill only entered athletes in nine of the 14 classes, and took fifth overall (with 113 points) as junior Sam Gilbert (171 lbs.) and senior Sam Greenwood (189) each repeated as individual champions.

Cardinal Dougherty was third with 121 points, New Hope-Solebury High School was fourth with 117.5, and George School finished just behind CHA with 104 points.

The tournament's Outstanding Wrestler award was shared by two seniors, Cardinal Dougherty 135-pounder Fran O'Brien, and Archbishop Carroll 145 Kyle Heselpoth.

There was another out-of-state team in attendance in...

Tigers take down Springside hoopsters

by TOM UTESCHER

Breaking free of a 6-6 deadlock at the start of the second quarter in last Wednesday's non-league hoops contest, host Germantown Friends stepped out to a 19-10 halftime lead while holding the visiting Springside Lions to just one field goal in the period.

The Tigers also outpointed their guests in the last two frames, coming away with a 45-28 win that raised their record to 2-1. All of Germantown's opponents so far have been from the Girls Inter-Ac League; GFS defeated Shipley and lost to Penn Charter.

Springside had arrived at Scattergood Gym with a 3-1 record that encompassed victories over Life Center, Philmont Christian, and Woodlynde, and a loss to the Hill School.

Kat Bixby, the junior point guard for the Tigers, registered a game-high 15 points, along with six steals, six rebounds, and two assists. Down low, a senior and a freshman teamed up to dominate the backboards for the winners, as the upperclassman, Misha Booker, finished with seven points and 14 boards, while varsity rookie Marisol McKee struck for 11 points and pulled ten rebounds.

Springside was led by sophomore Kira...

Larries lick CHA racquetmen

by TOM UTESCHER

A very good Chestnut Hill Academy squash team ran into a true scholastic powerhouse in the sport when Lawrenceville School paid a visit last Tuesday.

Led by Mexico's Mauricio Sanchez, currently the number one player in the world in the Under-19's, the Larries swept the host Blue Devils, 7-0, and won an exhibition match between the number eights, as well.

Previously, CHA had opened the season with a 7-0 victory of its own over Lower Merion High School, and on December 2 the locals defeated Franklin & Marshall College, 5-4. The individual winners against F&M were juniors Brooks Russell (#1) and Pat Davis (#5), freshman Sam Wetherill (#7), and juniors Dave DiDonato (#8) and Derek Winter (#9).

In the Lawrenceville match, a number of Chestnut Hill players were at least able to extend their bouts past the three-game minimum. The most tenacious was Davis, who lost a pair of 9-3 games to visiting sophomore Steve Preefer but then rallied to win the next two at 9-6 before Preefer prevailed in the fifth, 9-1.

At number three, where two juniors clashed, Nils Mattson...

GA netters top Springside

By TOM UTESCHER

Neither visiting Springside nor Germantown Academy had suffered a loss when the two volleyball squads met last Friday, and the host Patriots were the team which remained undefeated as they turned back the Lions, 3-0.

A veteran squad composed entirely of seniors save for sophomore Rachel Kloss, GA had opened its season by beating Academy of the New Church. Springside came in at 2-0, with wins over George School and Community Academy of Philadelphia. The Lions mostly play juniors and seniors, although talented eighth grader Devin McInerny has earned a place in the regular rotation.

A GA serve out over the baseline gave Springside the first point of the match, but the Patriots had soon stepped out to a 10-2 lead in the opening game. Julie Miller would score on a hit, a tip, and a block, and outside hitter Becca Fitch laid down two kills and a service ace for Germantown.

Later in the game Lucy Sorenson recorded a kill and McInerny aimed an ace for the Lions. The visitors got most of their points from simply keeping the ball in play and benefiting...

Chestnut Hill Youth Sports Club Friday Night League

Kings nip Celtics in overtime thriller

by TOM AMODIE

The new season in the Youth Sports Club Friday Night Basketball League began last week with a full slate of games.

The best of those games pitted the Kings versus the Celtics. This game needed an extra session to decide and it was a clutch trey by Tyler Regan in that extra frame that helped to lift the Kings over the Celtics 58-56. Regan led all scorers with 21 points.

The Kings led 9-8 after the first quarter on six points by Regan. The Celtics though outscored the Kings 18-6 in the second period as Jesse Biddle and Joe

Burke each scored seven points in the frame. Biddle and Burke finished with 20 and 15 points to guide the losers. The Kings played strong defense in the third quarter to hold the Celtics to a lone free throw while getting back into the game trailing 27-25 with a quarter remaining. In that fourth...
