Mount stops C.B. South, 55-49

by TOM UTESCHER

Remember the Titans? Well, you don't remember these Titans, because they'd never played a single game before last month. They're the girls basketball team at the imposing new high school in Warrington, Central Bucks South, and they gave visiting Mount St. Joseph Academy quite a run last Thursday before the Magic prevailed, 55-49.

The Magic rode to victory on 23 points by Emily Johnson (six rebounds, four steals) and eight apiece by Laura Johnson and Lauren Kummer (nine rebounds), climbing to a season mark of 7-1. The CB South Titans leveled off at 4-4, despite ten points from Stef Graff and nine from Liz Derr, both former Central Bucks East players.

The Mounties were also on the road earlier in the week, delivering a 54-38 setback to Villa Joseph Marie on Dec. 20. Assuming a modest 13-11 edge during the first quarter, the Magic pulled away to a 25-18 halftime count, then added ten more points to their lead in the third quarter. Emily Johnson and Kummer...

The CHA icemen cometh - again

by TOM UTESCHER

Chestnut Hill Academy's ice hockey team, disbanded in the mid-1980's, returned to action last Wednesday afternoon. The Blue Devils' first ice encounter in two decades came at the Academy of the New Church, where CHA earned a 4-0 lead over the first two periods, then survived a third period rally by the Lions to secure a 5-3 victory.

It was a particularly moving occasion for the CHA seniors, who thought until recently that they'd graduate from the local school without ever having donned a Chestnut Hill hockey sweater. The upperclassmen on the squad are: goalie Scott Redpath, defenseman Ryan Hoyes, and forwards Vince Amoroso, Rob Deery, Evan Farren, Kris Kimball, Hal Martin, and Pat Spanninger. CHA Dean of Students Bob St. George is the head coach of the fledgling squad.

The team rosters three juniors, two sophomores, and five freshmen, and one of the ninth graders is a Springside School student, Mary Beth Dougherty. She was out with an injury for the opener, and the Ice Devils were missing junior defenseman Ian Holton, who is also a varsity squash player...

Springside squash unbeaten at the interlude

by TOM UTESCHER

Despite the absence of their top player for two of the last three matches, the racquetwomen of Springside School prevailed in all three bouts on the road to enter the holiday break with a record of 6-0.

At the Germantown Cricket Club on Dec. 8, the Lions topped host Germantown Friends School, 5-2, and on the following afternoon Springside swept Girls Inter-Ac League rival Baldwin, 7-0. The Lions' regular number one, junior Emery Maine, missed both of those matches due to illness, but she was back in action for a December 14 encounter at Lawrenceville School, where Springside got by the Lady Larries, 4-3.

At Germantown, Allie Dalglish moved up to number one and came away a 3-0 winner, while Anna Heilbrun performed in the second spot and pulled out a 3-2 victory. The Tigers picked up their two individual wins courtesy of 3-0 efforts by the Tilney sisters, Avery (number three) and Carolyn (number four).

Springside's Riley Jacoby and Elspeth Lodge emerged on top...

PC girls fall to Ryan, 50-37

by TOM UTESCHER

A short-staffed Penn Charter girls basketball squad was outmuscled in the paint and outrun on the open floor last Tuesday, and the result was a 50-37 setback at the hands of visiting Archbishop Ryan High School.

Coming off of a pair of losses at Germantown Academy's tournament the previous weekend, Ryan (3-4) was hungry for a win, and Charter (5-2) was playing without regular starter Julie Bown, a junior forward who was out sick.

"With Julie out we're an even younger team," noted PC Head Coach Kim Morris. "We started a senior, a junior and three sophomores, and the two girls off the bench...

CHA squash tops Shipley, Charter before break

by TOM UTESCHER

With the only blemish on its record a Dec. 7 setback against national number one Lawrenceville, Chestnut Hill ended the 2004 portion of the squash season with an overall mark of 4-1. In their last week of competition in the old year, the Blue Devils blanked Shipley School, 7-0, on Dec. 14 and then won their Inter-Ac League opener the following afternoon over Penn Charter, 6-1. Both were home matches for CHA.

In the first of the recent bouts, Shipley's Jordan Greenberg took the first game of the number one match, 9-4, but Brooks Russell won the next three, 9-2, 9-2, 9-6, to clinch the bout for Chestnut Hill. The other Devils each won their matches in three straight games. Playing two through seven for the locals were Bobby Dickey, Nick Pearson, Bob Goldman, Pat Davis, Tyler Stout and Ian Holton. CHA also won two exhibition bouts, 3-0, thanks to Sam Wetherill and Dave DiDonato, who yielded a total of just three and two points, respectively.

The Blue Devils knew that Penn Charter would pose a more serious challenge. CHA coach Mike Jefferys reminded his charges that up and down the roster, the PC players stood higher...
