The Democratic primary for city council has often been called crowded. Four years ago, three candidates vied with incumbent Donna Reed Miller, who eventually won the race.
But this year, following the news that Miller will retire at the end of this year when her term is up, 10 — that’s right, 10 — Democrats have filed the petitions necessary to run in the May 17 primary.
Among the candidates are several familiar names. Community activist and Germantown native Greg Paulmier and Mt Airy resident and Rep. Chaka Fattah staffer Cindy Bass both ran against Miller in 2007.
Chestnut Hill resident, 9th ward Democratic committeeperson and former Rendell Administration staffer Donna Gentile-O’Donnell is running as well.
Verna Tyner was featured in the Local recently when she announced her candidacy in front of J.S. Jenks Elementary School with 9th Ward Democratic Committee Leader John O’ Connell.
Others running are: Fay Dawson, Jordan Dillard, Bill Durham, Andrew Lofton, Robin Tasco and Howard Treatman.
March 15 is the deadline for challenges to be filed against the petitions.
