Following a 258-275 loss to Agnes Irwin on Monday of last week, the Springside Lions came a lot closer on their home course the next afternoon, but still fell to the Owls, 271-279.
The youthful Springside squad, which has just one senior on the entire roster, saw its record decline to 0-5 on the season, while Irwin, another young team, improved to 2-3.
In Monday’s match at Philadelphia Country Club in Gladwyne, the host Owls won easily but Springside senior Amanda Culp fired the best round of the match, with a nine-hole score of 41. Culp also led the field the following afternoon, with a 47 positioning her one stroke ahead of another player in her foursome, AI senior Sara Clark.
Another stroke back, with a 49, was Springside junior Kelly Brady, who is co-captain for the Lions this spring along with Culp. The other member of this group, Irwin junior Chiru Murage, scored a 59.
While the visitors came out on the short end within this quartet, they made up ground when another foursome reported in. The Owls had juniors Emily Bailey and Courtney McGill turn in a 50 and a 56, respectively, while Springside marked down a 66 for Dena O’Larnic and a 68 for fellow junior Sam Blake.
With a total of just six players available for Springside (normally each team has eight official players and the top five scores count towards the team score), the other two groups on the course were threesomes consisting of one Springside freshman and two Agnes Irwin players.
Courtney Hamilton produced the Lions’ third-best round of the day, a 54, and her traveling companions, AI juniors Kui Murage (Chiru’s fraternal twin) and Emily Cyr, shot a 58 and a 64.
The other Springside ninth-grader, Morgan Schneer, also had the best outing within her threesome. Her score of 63 gave her bragging rights over visiting freshmen Grace Alburger (66) and Prianka Bedi (80), but in the final team tally, the Owls departed with an eight-stroke victory.
