Horace C. Jones II, 94, formerly of Chestnut Hill, a retired textile executive, died June 8 at Fox Hill Village, a retirement community in Westwood, Mass.
Mr. Jones retired in 1978 as chairman and CEO of Burlington Industries. He was named vice president of Burlington in 1960 when it acquired the Lees Carpet Co., where he had been president.
Mr. Jones also had been chairman and president of Chestnut Hill Hospital from 1979-1980 and president of the Travelers Aid Society of Philadelphia from 1954-55.
During his business career, he had served on the board of directors of Burlington Industries, Union Carbide Company, Union Camp Corporation, Wachovia Bank & Trust, Beneficial Savings Bank of Philadelphia, Provident Mutual Insurance Company of Philadelphia, and Russell Reynolds Associates.
Mr. Jones was involved in numerous religious, cultural and civic philanthropic pursuits. He was a Knight of Malta and contributed to and participated in many church and parish activities in both Philadelphia and South Dartmouth, Mass., where the family moved in 1990.
He was also an avid gardener and golfer, having been named the Philadelphia area Junior Golf Champion in 1937.
Mr. Jones is survived by sons Spencer Jones, of Westwood, Mass., Joseph Jones, of Wyndmoor, and Conrad Jones, of Hellertown; daughters Margaret Connors, of Sugar Hill, N.H., Joy Marsh, of Chestnut Hill, Ann Cole, of Fairfield, Mass., and Katherine Stillwell, of Dedham, Mass.; 22 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 17, at St. Margaret Mary Church in Westwood, Mass. Memorial services will be held in both Philadelphia and South Dartmouth, Mass. at a time to be announced.
