The psychedelic pop rock band Cheers Elephant will continue the Pastorius Park Concert Series with a performance in the park at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 17.
Cheers Elephant was formed in Philadelphia in 2007 and it has played at many venues in the area since. The band has appeared at World Café Live, the TLA, Johnny Brenda’s, the Blockley and the Piazza at Schmidt’s. On June 6, the band performed outside of Philadelphia’s City Hall for the City Hall Presents summer concert series.
The group, which played Pastorius Park in 2011, also made a name for itself outside of the Philadelphia area. It has played at venues in Texas, Wisconsin, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Georgia and North Carolina.
The band has released three albums. Its first self-titled album came out in 2008. Its second, “Man is Nature,”came out in 2011, and the most recent album, “Like Wind Blows Fire,” was released in May of 2012.
Cheers Elephant consists of lead vocalist/guitarist Derek Krzywicki, lead guitarist Jordan del Rosario, bassist “Travelin’ Matt” and drummer Roberto Kingston.
The group credits the West Grove, Pa., band, Dr. Dog, as one of its main influences, helping it form its own unique type of music. Cheers Elephant has also shared the stage with Jefferson Starship, and once it performed a version of the song “Twist” with Chubby Checker.
The rain location for each concert will be at Springside Chestnut Hill Academy’s Lower School Auditorium, Cherokee Campus, 8000 Cherokee St. Rain statuses will be posted on chestnuthill.org by 6 p.m. on the day of the show.
The concert series is organized and produced by the Chestnut Hill Community Association and made possible by donations from the Chestnut Hill Community Fund and Chestnut Hill Hospital. Further sponsorship is provided by WXPN and the Philadelphia Parks and Recreation Department. Be sure to check back with the Local for previews of each band act the week before each concert.
