College professors author book to assist incoming students

Judith Sullivan, associate professor of mathematics at Chestnut Hill College and the winner of 2013 Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching, has co-authored a book on academic empowerment for new students entering college.

The book, “From Angst to Empowerment: Strategic Planning for Collegiate and Academic Success,” co-authored with Chestnut Hill biology faculty member Barbara Giuliano, is a guidebook for students who are just beginning their academic career and provides a clear, concise path to achieve success in the college classroom.

Retreating from the college prep manuals that focus on the more social aspects of the college experience, Sullivan and Giuliano wrote a handbook to help college students tackle their studies though their SUCCESS learning strategy (self-reflection, uncertainty, challenge, change, epiphany, synthesis, self-empowerment).

Filling the gaps that can exist from high school and beginning college coursework, the book is the culmination of more than a decade of experience Sullivan and Giuliano culled from teaching in summer bridge programs and case studies. The result is a guidebook that is a must read for students who want to start their freshman year at college successfully.

“We are so pleased that students and guidance counselors everywhere now have access to our book,” Sullivan said. “Based on decades of teaching experience, our book guides students who are making the transition from high school to college. The unexpected reality of the rigors of college and the need to quickly cope with this challenging situation can often catch students off-guard. We give students the tools they need to succeed, laying out an easy-to-follow, seven-step process that will lead students to academic self-empowerment.”

It can be used as a self-help guidebook by an individual student, or it could be used as a textbook in a first year experience seminar or learning strategies course.”
