William J. Maher, 86, of Chestnut Hill, a longtime manager of hotels and country clubs, died Jan. 8 at the Edge Hill Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Glenside.
Until his retirement in 1994, Mr. Maher had held a variety of positions in the hotel/restaurant business, including training director for the Sheraton Hotels Corporation. He managed several hotel properties and country clubs around the country and, later in his career, was an executive recruiter for the hospitality industry.
Raised in Chestnut Hill, he was a graduate of Our Mother of Consolation Parish School, LaSalle High School and Villanova University. He was a member of the swimming team at LaSalle and the 150-pound football team at Villanova.
He served in the Army in Germany and Austria after World War II and was a member of the Ocean City Beach Patrol from 1944 to 1951.
Physically active throughout his life, he was an avid runner, competing in local road races, including the Broad Street Run and the Prevention Marathon. He also enjoyed swimming, playing golf and, later in life, walking.
He was fond of gardening and travel, having visited Ireland several times.
Mr. Maher was a lifelong member of Our Mother of Consolation Parish and an active member of the Villanova University Alumni Association.
He is survived by his wife, the former Ellen O’Neil; sons Andrew P., William J. Jr. and Joseph A.; a daughter, Ellen A.; a sister, Mary Schlussel, of Horsham; a brother, Joseph A. Maher, of Port Orange, Fla., and 10 grandchildren.
A funeral Mass was celebrated Jan. 14 at Our Mother of Consolation Church, 9 E. Chestnut Hill Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19118. Memorial donations may be made to the above church. – WF
