Murray Earle II died peacefully, surrounded by his family on Monday, March 10. He died at the age of 58 from the complications of ALS at the Penn Hospice at Rittenhouse. He was the son of James Morris Earle II, deceased, and Carol Helms Lippincott of Chestnut Hill. Murray was born in Philadelphia on July 10, 1955. He was a graduate of Chestnut Hill Academy and attended the University of Miami and The Philadelphia College of Art. He moved to St. Thomas, Virgin Islands in the 1980s where he could better pursue his life-long passion of surfing. In addition to surfing, he also enjoyed sailing. He was a talented artist. Except for a brief move back to Philadelphia, Murray lived most of his days in St. Thomas where he worked as a graphic designer. He was happiest when he could “check the waves” each morning from his house overlooking St. Thomas’ Hull Bay. He is survived by his sister Frances Earle Newbold and her children Emily Pearsall and Sophia Newbold and her grandchildren Avery and Sophia Pearsall; sister Elizabeth Earle Miller and her children Simon Earle Cameron and Oliver Miller, brother James Morris Earle III and his children Caitlin and Samuel; sister Ellen Fisher Earle and her children Jane and Alice Finta; brother Samuel Morris Earle and his child Viola; step sisters Louise, Deborah, Frances and Elizabeth Lippincott; and in-laws William Newbold, Jerry Miller, Anthony Finta, Kate Earle, Anthony Pearsall. Memorial gatherings are planned for the summer in Chestnut Hill, Mantoloking, New Jersey and St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. Memorial donations to the ALS Association or Penn Hospice at Rittenhouse would be appreciated.
