Germantown Friends School senior Ethan Genyk won the bronze medal in the varsity single at the Philadelphia City Championships on Sunday, May 18,

A sculler from Bonner/Prendergast High School won the gold medal, with the silver medalist from St. Joseph’s Prep finishing just 0.19 seconds ahead of Genyk. The Tigers senior was more than eight seconds ahead of number four Upper Dublin, which in turn led two entries from Roman Catholic.

For most of his high school career, Genyk rowed in a double with GFS classmate Greg Goldstein, but Goldstein (who plans to row at Washington University in St. Louis) was injured earlier this season and was unable to compete.

Following in the footsteps (wake?) of his mother, Daphne Klausner, Genyk will join the lightweight rowing program at the University of Pennsylvania. His younger sister, Becca, is just finishing her second season with the GFS crew.
