Beatty Jennings Smith, 81, formerly of Chestnut Hill, a retired marketing executive at GlaxoSmithKline, died June 3 at the Highlands, a retirement community in Topsham, Maine.

After retiring from GlaxoSmithKline in 1986, Mr. Smith became executive vice president of The Church Foundation, the investment office of the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania based in Philadelphia, serving until 1999.

Chestnut Hill residents for more than 40 years, Mr. Smith and his wife, the former Audrey Hazlitt, moved to Maine in 2000.

Mr. Smith was a graduate of the William Penn Charter School, where he won several fencing championships, and Williams College, where he majored in music and led the chapel choir.

Music continued to be an important part of his life. He sang for many years with the Orpheus Club, a distinguished Philadelphia men’s singing group that frequently performed at the Academy of Music. He also had had a collection of more than 1,500 CDs.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Smith is survived by a daughter, Amy Chapman; a sister, Martha Fava, of Yarmouth, Maine, and a granddaughter. A brother, Cooper, preceded him in death.

A memorial service to celebrate Mr. Smith’s life will be held at the convenience of the family. – WF
