The first week of July will start off with a show by the upbeat Philly band The Lawsuits, which takes the Pastorius Park Concert stage at 7:30 p.m. The band will be welcomed by WXPN.

The Lawsuits, a four-piece band, is composed of songwriter and lyricist Brian Dale Allen Strouse, backing vocalist Vanessa Winters, Brendan Cunningham and Josh Friedman. The band’s sound has been described as a “schizophrenic mix of modern Americana,” and, indeed, though it can get poppy at times, it can sound stylistically a lot like fellow Philly travelers Dr. Dog.

The band came together about four years ago, playing small venues near its home base of New Hope.

Since then, it’s been a pretty quick rise in popularity, culminating with an “Indie Band of the Year” recognition from the Tri -State Indie awards and a new record, “Cool Cool Cool,” that was recorded nearby in East Falls by Bill Moriarty, the sound engineer behind well-regarded records by Dr. Dog and Man Man.

They have played regularly around the region, including the CMJ Festival in Brooklyn and the Philly Folk Festival.

For a taste of the band’s sound, see its video for the song “Love is Weight” at thelawsuitsband.com.

The Pastorius Park concert series is produced annually by the Chestnut Hill Community Association and is sponsored by the Chestnut Hill Community Fund and Chestnut Hill Hospital.

If it rains, the concert will be moved to the Lower School Auditorium of Springside Chestnut Hill Academy’s Cherokee Campus. Be sure to check chestnuthill.org, where notice of a rain move will be posted after 6 p.m. the day of the concert.
