DESCRIPTION:<p>Saturday\, Nov. 24\, 2012<br />\n5 p.m.<br />\nBig Blue Marb
 le Bookstore<br />\n551 Carpenter Lane</p>\n<p>In City of Brotherly Love\,
Ned Bachus takes us to a place that gives as much as it takes\, with cont
emporary characters as rich as Philadelphia&#8217\;s history. Bakers\, wai
tresses\, pharmaceutical reps\, and bass playing plumbers show us\, not ju
st what its like to be a Philadelphian\, but what it means to be human. Ba
chus&#8217\;s writing perfectly captures the intricacies and contradiction
s of a city in search of itself. Yet Bachus&#8217\;s marvelous collection
is more than just a portrait of Philadelphia. He approaches his city from
so many directions\, and his characters encompass so many layers of experi
ence\, that it is easy to forget that these were all the product of a sing
le imagination. These are wise stories\, beautifully crafted and full of h
eart.<br />\nNed Bachus served as a counselor and as Associate Professor o
f English at Community College of Philadelphia from 1974 to 2012\, where h
e received the Alana Collos Award for Teaching Excellence and the Christia
n and Mary Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching. His stories have app
eared in various publications including The Louisville Review\, Calliope\,
Antietam Review\, Meridian Bound\, Carve and The Evansville Review\; he h
as won fellowships from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and an artist
residency at Cill Rialaig Project in Ireland.</p>
