Contreras was the mother of five children the day the Salvadoran Armed Forces initiated “a large-scale operation in which the civilian population was indiscriminately attacked,” according to a report by Amnesty International. The attack focused on three towns whose inhabitants fled the massacre. Contreras, her husband and their children were discovered by the military the next day forcing them to flee. They were running when Contrereas saw soldiers grab her one-year-old son Serapio Cristian and four-year-old daughter Gregoria Herminia by the hair and drag them away. She then fell while running with her infant who slipped from her arms and was also carried away by a soldier.

Along with Maura’s presentation, a locally produced documentary on the subject of the disappeared children of El Salvador, Niños de la Memoria, will be shown and producer María Teresa Rodríguez will be present for a brief discussion. While admission is free, donations are encouraged and will support the search of the missing children as well as the solidarity work of the Romero Interfaith Center in El Salvador.
