“Shadows of Men” consists of thirteen stories about thirteen men. Some of these men live in the shadows of other men, such as their fathers or male ancestors, while others are shadows themselves—either the fading shadows of their former selves or the inadequate shadows of their desired selves.

All feel less than whole in some fashion, either because of their own faults and weaknesses, or because of the unrealizable expectations of others. Occupying a suburban terrain where insecurity, uncertainty, and inadequacy hound their protagonists, the stories of “Shadows of Men” provide a dignified, near-elegiac portrait of the modern man.

Kevin Grauke’s fiction has appeared in such national literary journals as Fiction, The Southern Review, Story Quarterly, Quarterly West, Five Chapters, and Hayden’s Ferry Review. After receiving an MFA in Creative Writing at Texas State University and a PhD in American literature from the University at Buffalo, he moved to Philadelphia, where he teaches at La Salle University.
