      Meet your fitness goals and enjoy the Wissahickon at the same time. The Friends of the Wissahickon (FOW) is offering another free fitness hike in Wissahickon Valley Park led by FOW Trail Ambassadors Gay Bain and Diane Garvey. With sufficient interest, FOW will offer these fitness walks on a weekly basis. Meet at Northwestern Drive and Forbidden Drive in front of The Cedars House. Make new friends or visit with neighbors as you walk at a pace set by the group. This four-mile hike (two miles out and two miles back) will take place along scenic Forbidden Drive. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water. Walks are cancelled in the event of heavy rain. Registration is required and always recommended so that you can be informed if there are changes. Big Blue Marble Bookstore will have its special craft table open all weekend, stocked with brightly colored paper, collage materials, and all kinds of other supplies to create your own books. (Adult Supervision Required.) Special Door Prizes! Winners will be randomly selected throughout the entire weekend to win free books, promotional goodies, and more. Stop by with your family and get a chance to go home with all kinds of special treats. Don’t miss Festival Storytime with Amanda Hendricks at 10:30 a.m. Get ready to read some of our favorite stories, play, move, imagine, and sing. (Ages toddler to 5).       Expert led Nature Walks, Poetry Readings, presentations by representatives from local watershed and environmental groups, representatives from Friends of Carpenter’s Woods, Friends of the Wissahickon, Philadelphia Parks & Recreation, and others to answer questions about Woods and Watershed projects, native plants, birds, and animals, and Carpenter’s Woods history. This day of events is in conjunction with a scheduled Friends of Carpenter’s Woods Volunteer Service Day to plant trees and remove invasive plants. Part of Love Your Park Week events celebrating Philadelphia’s neighborhood parks.

      Nature walks are scheduled for both morning and afternoon. Please check the schedule on the kiosks when you enter the woods. Bring your questions, your curiosity, your energy, and enjoy the day in the woods with your neighbors. Lunch and free t-shirts provided for Service Volunteers. Tools and gloves also provided. Well-behaved dogs on leashes are welcome. Free. The Ellet Trail entrance is at the intersection of Ellet and Sherman Streets. For information go to www.focw.org.

      The Teen Center located directly across from the Chestnut Hill East Train station is open every Friday night from 7:30 to 10:30 pm for 12-15 year olds. The Teen Center is now open for High School Students on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of every month from 7:30 pm to 10:30 pm. The Center is staffed by a young adult who has his/her clearances. Special Events include: Games, Movies, Drumming, Nintendo Wii, Live music and Open Mic nights. Some Fridays are just TGIF nights to hang with friends. There is free access to the Teen Center with a $25 yearly membership. All teens are admitted with a $5 guest fee charge.

      Join yoga teacher Deirdre Vezirov Kilkenny as she reads from The Yoga Game, and incorporates yoga postures. (Ages 3-7)

      11:15 a.m. – Storytime with Lauren Grace. Come sing songs, play games, and read some books. (Ages toddler to 4 years old)

      12 p.m. – Harry Potter Fun with Grace Gordon. Are you a kid that can’t get enough of the Harry Potter series? Join me and other like-minded fans for Harry Potter themed snacks, wand making, and a fun character game. Attendees are encouraged to wear Harry Potter character costumes, t-shirts, and any other magical items that come to mind. (Ages 7 and up)

      Open Barns Day is a day to celebrate the horses living right here in Fairmount Park. All seven park barns will be open to the public for tours and special activities, allowing you to get up close and personal with the horses.       There will be a portion of time for a free guided tour of the Morris Arboretum on Saturday afternoon, with the emphasis being determined by the various interests of those touring. Each tour is designed specifically to highlight a particular section of the arboretum, however, there is no itinerary. It is recommended that those who are touring for the first time select the general tour of the arboretum to get an over-all idea of what the gardens have to offer.       Daniel Torday and Curtis Smith, two well-known local authors, will read from their latest works.
      Winner of the National Jewish Book Award for Outstanding Debut Fiction, Daniel Torday’s short novel The Sensualist follows a nice suburban teenager into distgurbing realms he has never experienced before, exposing him to violence, class hatred and defiant honesty.

      In his eighth book of fiction, Curtis Smith mingles short-shorts and longer stories about loss—loss of love, family, health or some other essential. His tales capture brief moments that have lasting and complex implications. Free and open to the public; complimentary refreshments served.
