      Ellet Street entrance and trail

      Expert led Nature Walks, Poetry Readings, presentations by representatives from local watershed and environmental groups, representatives from Friends of Carpenter’s Woods, Friends of the Wissahickon, Philadelphia Parks & Recreation, and others to answer questions about Woods and Watershed projects, native plants, birds, and animals, and Carpenter’s Woods history. This day of events is in conjunction with a scheduled Friends of Carpenter’s Woods Volunteer Service Day to plant trees and remove invasive plants. Part of Love Your Park Week events celebrating Philadelphia’s neighborhood parks.

      Nature walks are scheduled for both morning and afternoon. Please check the schedule on the kiosks when you enter the woods. Bring your questions, your curiosity, your energy, and enjoy the day in the woods with your neighbors. Lunch and free t-shirts provided for Service Volunteers. Tools and gloves also provided. Well-behaved dogs on leashes are welcome. Free. The Ellet Trail entrance is at the intersection of Ellet and Sherman Streets. For information go to www.focw.org.

      Join yoga teacher Deirdre Vezirov Kilkenny as she reads from The Yoga Game, and incorporates yoga postures. (Ages 3-7)

      11:15 a.m. – Storytime with Lauren Grace. Come sing songs, play games, and read some books. (Ages toddler to 4 years old)

      12 p.m. – Harry Potter Fun with Grace Gordon. Are you a kid that can’t get enough of the Harry Potter series? Join me and other like-minded fans for Harry Potter themed snacks, wand making, and a fun character game. Attendees are encouraged to wear Harry Potter character costumes, t-shirts, and any other magical items that come to mind. (Ages 7 and up)

      1 p.m. – Afternoon Drawing Workshop with Mark Mattson. (Ages 6 and up) He is a Philadelphia-based artist, writer, illustrator, and designer.

      2 p.m. – Reading and crafts with Ame Dyckman, author of Boy + Bot and Tea Party Rules.
      Join author Ame Dyckman for a cool Boy + Bot reading, with robot crafts and giveaways, and a special sneak peek into her forthcoming book, Tea Party Rules. (Ages 4 and up)

      3 p.m. – Creating Graphic Novels/Comic Books with Marta Rose and Judy McCoubry.

      Open Barns Day is a day to celebrate the horses living right here in Fairmount Park. All seven park barns will be open to the public for tours and special activities, allowing you to get up close and personal with the horses.       Daniel Torday and Curtis Smith, two well-known local authors, will read from their latest works.
      Winner of the National Jewish Book Award for Outstanding Debut Fiction, Daniel Torday’s short novel The Sensualist follows a nice suburban teenager into distgurbing realms he has never experienced before, exposing him to violence, class hatred and defiant honesty.

      In his eighth book of fiction, Curtis Smith mingles short-shorts and longer stories about loss—loss of love, family, health or some other essential. His tales capture brief moments that have lasting and complex implications. Free and open to the public; complimentary refreshments served.

      The Friends of J.S. Jenks, an independent fundraising organization consisting of parents, teachers, administrators and community members, will host their annual silent auction and reception supporting music, arts and enrichment programs. This year’s theme is “Oh, the Places We’ll Go,” inspired by optimistic spirit of Dr. Seuss, this fundraising event features a variety of auction items from area businesses and organizations.

      In addition to the live entertainment, kid-friendly food, appetizers, desserts, and drinks. Children are welcome to participate in games and craft activities while parents bid on auction items. This year’s event will mark the launch of a major fundraising drive to renovate Jenk’s auditorium, transforming it into a modern performance and community space while preserving its historic charm.

      The cost is $20 per person; $30 for two and $40 per family.       The Urban Athletics classes are a 45 minute high-intensity blend of bodyweight exercises, speed and agility training, dumbbell & kettlebell training and more. Each class is lead by an instructor, taking you through your workout step-by-step, just like personal training without the added cost. This way you don’t have to worry about what you’re workout will be each day, nor do you have to question if you’re doing an exercise incorrectly. There is always a coach on staff to lead you through each workout. The cost is $20.
