This summer, Morris Arboretum’s Garden Railway will transport visitors to the far ends of the earth. Spanning the globe, visitors will experience magical visits to The Great Wall of China (China), The Leaning Tower of Pisa (Italy), Hagia Sophia (Istanbul), Tikal (Guatemala) Maachu Picchu (Peru), Petra (Jordan), the Giza Pyramid and Alexandria Light House (Egypt), and The Eiffel Tower (Paris). Grand Opening activities will take place on Saturday. Take part in a fun kids craft and enjoy free ice cream (while supplies last) beginning at 1 p.m. Free with admission.

Chestnut Hill Hospital’s certified diabetes educator, Susan Pierce, MPT, CDE, will help you understand managing diabetes to stay healthy. All are welcome to take part in this series of small-group workshops, where participants receive personalized attention and learn what it takes to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Participants can sign up for one or all workshops, or just attend the cooking workshop. Session 2: It’s Not Just about Food: The impact of activity, options in medications, understanding blood sugar results and how to avoid complications. Session 3: Going for your Goal: Setting realistic goals and overcoming pitfalls. The Teen Center is now open for High School Students on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of every month from 7:30 pm to 10:30 pm. The Center is staffed by a young adult who has his/her clearances. Special Events include: Games, Movies, Drumming, Nintendo Wii, Live music and Open Mic nights. Some Fridays are just TGIF nights to hang with friends. There is free access to the Teen Center with a $25 yearly membership. All teens are admitted with a $5 guest fee charge.

Center on the Hill, 8855 Germantown Ave.Chestnut Hill resident Verona Barrett is a local artist whose professional path was in nursing but who has filled her retirement with her love of art. Vee initially studied in Chestnut Hill with De Campbell. For the last seven years she has studied with Howard Watson at the Woodmere Art Museum, focusing primarily on watercolor. Her work will be on display at Center on the Hill through the month of June.

2013 Juneteenth Festival: Celebrating Freedom, Culture, & Community10:00 am – 4:00 pm

6300 Germantown Ave.Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States and celebrated annually at the Johnson House in Historic Germantown. Join us this year for our free community festival to celebrate the 148th Anniversary of Juneteenth. The festival will feature historic tours, live music, food, dancers, exhibits, and childrens activities depicting the history of the anti-slavery and abolitionist movements in America. With special guest appearances by Harriet Tubman and Henry “Box” Brown sharing their personal stories of freedom.
At 10 a.m., there will be a Freedom Walk from the Historic Marker at Germantown Ave. and Wister St. designating the “First Written Protest Against Slavery” to the Johnson House. The parade will stop at the Germantown Town Hall site where the original Townhall served as the hospital during the Civil War. The site will be open 12 – 7 p.m. as part of the 2013 Hidden City Festival, a unique opportunity to see inside this relic of a building. For more information call 215-438-1768.
