      8 p.m. – Free Will Offering

Anthony Lawton has adapted C.S. Lewis’ novella, The Great Divorce, into an 80-minute, solo performance. The play is the story of Clive, who, along with a motley crew of malcontents, takes a bus ride from hell to heaven. They are offered a chance to stay in heaven forever if they like, but the choice between joy and miserable loneliness proves to be much harder than they would have guessed. The piece is a feast of rich language, profound psychological insight, and humor.

It is war time, 1942, in a small Texas town. There, four ladies of 60 who have known each other all their lives form the local garden club and have a hand in most of the social activities of the town. Laura Lee, the wife of the mayor who disappeared a year ago, is more or less the leader. The others are her sister-in-law, her sister and a married lady named Glendine. On this day, Laura Lee brings home a waifish 18-year-old girl she found at the bus stop, tired and hungry. She had been waiting for her soldier boyfriend so they could be married before he shipped out. The big-hearted ladies decide to stage a real, elaborate wedding for the girl, but, will the boy actually arrive and will the differences among the women that have been half-hidden come to the surface? This is a lovely play with laughs and heartfelt emotion. Free on-site parking. Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15

    9. “Shadows of Men” reading with Kevin Grauke
      5:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Local author to read from his new book “Shadows of Men”
      5 p.m.
      Big Blue Marble Bookstore
      551 Carpenter Lane

“Shadows of Men” consists of thirteen stories about thirteen men. Some of these men live in the shadows of other men, such as their fathers or male ancestors, while others are shadows themselves—either the fading shadows of their former selves or the inadequate shadows of their desired selves.

All feel less than whole in some fashion, either because of their own faults and weaknesses, or because of the unrealizable expectations of others. Occupying a suburban terrain where insecurity, uncertainty, and inadequacy hound their protagonists, the stories of “Shadows of Men” provide a dignified, near-elegiac portrait of the modern man.

Kevin Grauke’s fiction has appeared in such national literary journals as Fiction, The Southern Review, Story Quarterly, Quarterly West, Five Chapters, and Hayden’s Ferry Review. After receiving an MFA in Creative Writing at Texas State University and a PhD in American literature from the University at Buffalo, he moved to Philadelphia, where he teaches at La Salle University.
