Airy Art Garage, a creative center for emerging and professional artists in Northwest Philadelphia, invites you to join us for the opening of RUST3, also known as “Renewed Urban Studio Tent.” If nature was allowed to reclaim the land in the city, it would undoubtedly re-use humanity’s refuse and incorporate it into its new life. This sentiment is at the heart of RUST3. Though this multi-dimensional project, artists Andy Walker and Andy Heisey illustrate how materials found in Philadelphia can be recycled into a new structure that builds on the once-contaminated urban soil.
RUST is a wigwam-like structure that was first created out of recycled materials with the help of artists and local residents on the vacant lot at 313 S. Broad Street in Philadelphia in August 2012. A month later, the structure was recycled in a second version of RUST just across the street and displayed the bones (wooden arches, living green roof, clay tiles with iron oxide prints of abandoned houses, and windows made from glass bottles) and skin (refuse mixed with slag cement creating collages) of the structure itself. The final version of this project, RUST3, will be created at the Mt. Airy Art Garage at 11 West Mt. Airy Ave.
This gallery exhibition will display the work of the artists who worked inside this studio and a new version of RUST, complete with a video of the entire process of the project, as well as the special entrance and model. After the opening on Nov. 10, a citywide panel entitled “Artists Taking Back Philadelphia – Brick by Brick” will take place on Sunday, Nov. 11 at 2 p.m.
This panel will feature both Walker and Heisey; Gary Steuer, the Chief Cultural Officer for the City of Philadelphia; as well as Shari Hersh and Dre Urhah from Philly Painting (a project of the MuralArts Program). In this panel, topics of urban renewal as well as how artists have and can continue to assist in the changes needed to preserve our collective future will be addressed. Admission is $10. RUST3 opens on Saturday, Nov. 10 at 6 p.m. and continues until Sunday, Dec. 9. General hours are: Thursday-Saturday, noon till 6 p.m. and Sunday, noon till 5 p.m.

Save the date! Mural Dedication and Reception: Wissahickon Crossing on Nov. 103:00 pm – 4:00 am
The City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program and the citizens of Chestnut Hill invite the community to celebrate Wissahickon Crossing, a new mural on the facade of Bredenbeck’s Bakery, 8126 Germantown Ave., on Nov. 10 at 3 p.m. Jane Golden, Executive Director of Mural Arts, and muralist Ann Northrup will dedicate the landmark mural project. Immediately after the dedication, there will be a reception featuring wine, cider, hors d’oeuvres, and a mural-inspired cake, hosted by Bowman Properties and Bredenbeck’s Bakery.
The City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program and Bredenbeck’s Bakery proudly dedicate Chestnut Hill’s first mural, Wissahickon Crossing, designed and painted by muralist Ann Northrup. Ann was chosen after a dynamic and competitive artist selection; her final design is taken from a pleine-aire watercolor painted directly on the building’s facade. It features a scene at the confluence of Cresheim Creek with the Wissahickon River, and a view of Forbidden Drive hidden by trees. The painting is reproduced with a tactile hand and brilliant glazes unusual in mural painting. It is framed by architectural and botanical details that unite it with Chestnut Hill’s setting. Wissahickon Crossing is Mural Arts’ first mural in Chestnut Hill, and was completely financed by individuals and businesses in Chestnut Hill.
There will be a one-time guided trolley tour of the more than 20 Mural Arts Program murals in Mt. Airy and Germantown, including historical facts about points of interest in the neighborhoods. The Mural Arts Tour of Northwest Philadelphia will take place on Saturday, November 24, 2012 from 10 a.m. – noon, leaving from the Trolley Car Diner, 7619 Germantown Ave. (near Cresheim Drive). Price: $30/adults; $28/seniors; $20/children (12 and under).

Quintessence Theatre Group opens its third season with Shakespeare’s tragedy Othello.Othello the Moor is the celebrated general of Venice. Virtuous, steadfast and politic, Othello falls in love and impetuously marries Desdemona, a powerful senator’s daughter. Iago, an ambitious subordinate, turns mortal enemy when Othello makes Cassio, an untested scholar of war, his new lieutenant. Reason and passion collide as Iago preys on Othello’s greatest vulnerability, his love for Desdemona.
In an electrifying return to the Elizabethan tradition of all-male Shakespeare, Quintessence regulars Khris Davis and Josh Carpenter will lead the ten-actor ensemble. They will be joined by Ross Bennett Hurwitz who makes his Quintessence and Philadelphia debut as Desdemona.
Othello plays October 10 – November 4. Post-show discussions with the cast and director will take place on Thursday, October 24 and Sunday, October 28. Performances take place on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 7 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., and Sundays at 3 p.m.
Tickets are $30, $20 for seniors (65 and over), $15 for youth (25 and under). The Teen Center is now open for High School Students on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of every month from 7:30 pm to 10:30 pm. The Center is staffed by a young adult who has his/her clearances. Special Events include: Games, Movies, Drumming, Nintendo Wii, Live music and Open Mic nights. Some Fridays are just TGIF nights to hang with friends. There is free access to the Teen Center with a $25 yearly membership. All teens are admitted with a $5 guest fee charge.
