Quintessence Theatre Group opens its third season with Shakespeare’s tragedy Othello.Othello the Moor is the celebrated general of Venice. Virtuous, steadfast and politic, Othello falls in love and impetuously marries Desdemona, a powerful senator’s daughter. Iago, an ambitious subordinate, turns mortal enemy when Othello makes Cassio, an untested scholar of war, his new lieutenant. Reason and passion collide as Iago preys on Othello’s greatest vulnerability, his love for Desdemona.
In an electrifying return to the Elizabethan tradition of all-male Shakespeare, Quintessence regulars Khris Davis and Josh Carpenter will lead the ten-actor ensemble. They will be joined by Ross Bennett Hurwitz who makes his Quintessence and Philadelphia debut as Desdemona.
Othello plays October 10 – November 4. Post-show discussions with the cast and director will take place on Thursday, October 24 and Sunday, October 28. Performances take place on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 7 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., and Sundays at 3 p.m.
Tickets are $30, $20 for seniors (65 and over), $15 for youth (25 and under). There are $10 industry and student rush tickets available at the box office one hour before the performance pending availability. The maze will be open until October 28. The theme for the 2012 maze draws inspiration from the Harry Potter series. Diagon Alley is a cobbled wizarding alley and shopping area located in London behind a pub called the Leaky Cauldron. Inside the alley is an assortment of shops where wands, charms, and all items on the Hogwarts supply list can be bought. Visitors will find everything a wizard needs to cast spells. 850 lb. bales have been arranged in concentric squares, nesting one inside the other.At the perimeter, bales are stacked to create post and lintel portals for access to magic markets. Beyond the portals is the “commitment wall” – a diaphanous honeycomb wall of straw bales intended to challenge the visitor. At the center of the maze resides a mystical red sphere. Seek-and-find activities will also be available to guide visitors through the maze.

The Teen Center located directly across from the Chestnut Hill East Train station is open every Friday night from 7:30 to 10:30 pm for 12-15 year olds. The Teen Center is now open for High School Students on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of every month from 7:30 pm to 10:30 pm. The Center is staffed by a young adult who has his/her clearances. Special Events include: Games, Movies, Drumming, Nintendo Wii, Live music and Open Mic nights. Some Fridays are just TGIF nights to hang with friends. There is free access to the Teen Center with a $25 yearly membership. All teens are admitted with a $5 guest fee charge.

There will be a portion of time for a free guided tour of the Morris Arboretum on Saturday afternoon, with the emphasis being determined by the various interests of those touring. Each tour is designed specifically to highlight a particular section of the arboretum, however, there is no itinerary. It is recommended that those who are touring for the first time select the general tour of the arboretum to get an over-all idea of what the gardens have to offer. The City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program and the citizens of Chestnut Hill invite the community to celebrate Wissahickon Crossing, a new mural on the facade of Bredenbeck’s Bakery, 8126 Germantown Ave., on Nov. 10 at 3 p.m. Jane Golden, Executive Director of Mural Arts, and muralist Ann Northrup will dedicate the landmark mural project. Immediately after the dedication, there will be a reception featuring wine, cider, hors d’oeuvres, and a mural-inspired cake, hosted by Bowman Properties and Bredenbeck’s Bakery.
The City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program and Bredenbeck’s Bakery proudly dedicate Chestnut Hill’s first mural, Wissahickon Crossing, designed and painted by muralist Ann Northrup. Ann was chosen after a dynamic and competitive artist selection; her final design is taken from a pleine-aire watercolor painted directly on the building’s facade. It features a scene at the confluence of Cresheim Creek with the Wissahickon River, and a view of Forbidden Drive hidden by trees. The painting is reproduced with a tactile hand and brilliant glazes unusual in mural painting. It is framed by architectural and botanical details that unite it with Chestnut Hill’s setting. Wissahickon Crossing is Mural Arts’ first mural in Chestnut Hill, and was completely financed by individuals and businesses in Chestnut Hill.
There will be a one-time guided trolley tour of the more than 20 Mural Arts Program murals in Mt. Airy and Germantown, including historical facts about points of interest in the neighborhoods. The Mural Arts Tour of Northwest Philadelphia will take place on Saturday, November 24, 2012 from 10 a.m. – noon, leaving from the Trolley Car Diner, 7619 Germantown Ave. (near Cresheim Drive). Price: $30/adults; $28/seniors; $20/children (12 and under).

Diagon Alley is a cobbled wizarding alley and shopping area located in London behind a pub called the Leaky Cauldron. Inside the alley is an assortment of shops where wands, charms, and all items on the Hogwarts supply list can be bought. Visitors will find everything a wizard needs to cast spells. 850 lb. bales have been arranged in concentric squares, nesting one inside the other.At the perimeter, bales are stacked to create post and lintel portals for access to magic markets. Beyond the portals is the “commitment wall” – a diaphanous honeycomb wall of straw bales intended to challenge the visitor. At the center of the maze resides a mystical red sphere. Seek-and-find activities will also be available to guide visitors through the maze.
Magical art-making activities will be held Fridays, 6-7 p.m., and Saturdays, 2-4 p.m. They are free and include: September 14–15, Wizard Hats; September 21–22, Magic Wands; September 28–29, Cloaks of Invisibility; October 5–6, Wizard Hats; October 12–13, Hogwarts Castle; October 19–20, Magic Book; October 26–28, Harry Potter Weekend, including Tri-Wizard Tournament, Magic Wands, and Treats from the Trolley.
