      Chestnut Hill College will host an academic conference on “Harry Potter: Reflections on the Major Themes in J.K. Rowling’s Literature” on Friday in the Rotunda, St. Joseph Hall. The conference is an academic outlet for students, faculty and other scholars to present papers/research related to the “Harry Potter book series. This conference brings a scholarly component to the Harry Potter Weekend and the 3rd Annual Philadelphia Brotherly Love Quidditch Cup Tournament. The conference is free and open to the public, although registering is encouraged.

      The final Mt Airy Train Station Concert of the season will feature Picturesque, an indie rock band from Reading, featuring Mt. Airy bass player Mark Chandler White, for a free concert on Friday, October 26, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Gowen Ave. and Devon St.  

      The band has just released its first CD, all original songs written by singer/songwriter Nicholas Homa and these songs can be previewed at the band’s website, http://www.thepicturesque.net/live/ Opening for Picturesque is local singer/songwriter Tague Wilkins featuring an acoustic set of his own compositions.

      The Teen Center located directly across from the Chestnut Hill East Train station is open every Friday night from 7:30 to 10:30 pm for 12-15 year olds. The Teen Center is now open for High School Students on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of every month from 7:30 pm to 10:30 pm. The Center is staffed by a young adult who has his/her clearances. Special Events include: Games, Movies, Drumming, Nintendo Wii, Live music and Open Mic nights. Some Fridays are just TGIF nights to hang with friends. There is free access to the Teen Center with a $25 yearly membership. All teens are admitted with a $5 guest fee charge.

      The Woodmere Art Museum presents its Fall 2012 straw maze “Diagon Alley.” Hours are Fridays, 6–8 p.m., Saturdays 10 a.m.–6 p.m., and Sundays 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Families welcome; ages 4–11 with adult $8 per child ($6 members); $20 for families of three or more ($18 members).

      The maze will be open until October 28. The theme for the 2012 maze draws inspiration from the Harry Potter series. Diagon Alley is a cobbled wizarding alley and shopping area located in London behind a pub called the Leaky Cauldron. Inside the alley is an assortment of shops where wands, charms, and all items on the Hogwarts supply list can be bought. Visitors will find everything a wizard needs to cast spells. 850 lb. bales have been arranged in concentric squares, nesting one inside the other.At the perimeter, bales are stacked to create post and lintel portals for access to magic markets. Beyond the portals is the “commitment wall” – a diaphanous honeycomb wall of straw bales intended to challenge the visitor. At the center of the maze resides a mystical red sphere. Seek-and-find activities will also be available to guide visitors through the maze.

Each tour is designed specifically to highlight a particular section of the arboretum, however, there is no itinerary. It is recommended that those who are touring for the first time select the general tour of the arboretum to get an over-all idea of what the gardens have to offer.
