Magic themed straw maze at Woodmere Art Museum10:00 am – 5:00 pm

9201 Germantown Ave.The Woodmere Art Museum presents its Fall 2012 straw maze “Diagon Alley.” Hours are Fridays, 6–8 p.m., Saturdays 10 a.m.–6 p.m., and Sundays 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Families welcome; ages 4–11 with adult $8 per child ($6 members); $20 for families of three or more ($18 members).
The maze will be open until October 28. The theme for the 2012 maze draws inspiration from the Harry Potter series. Diagon Alley is a cobbled wizarding alley and shopping area located in London behind a pub called the Leaky Cauldron. Inside the alley is an assortment of shops where wands, charms, and all items on the Hogwarts supply list can be bought. Visitors will find everything a wizard needs to cast spells. 850 lb. bales have been arranged in concentric squares, nesting one inside the other.At the perimeter, bales are stacked to create post and lintel portals for access to magic markets. Beyond the portals is the “commitment wall” – a diaphanous honeycomb wall of straw bales intended to challenge the visitor. At the center of the maze resides a mystical red sphere. Seek-and-find activities will also be available to guide visitors through the maze.

3822 Ridge Ave.From 1838-1844, Edgar Allan Poe found his home in Philadelphia. During those six years, he produced some of his best-known and most haunting works, including “The Tell-Tale Heart,” “The Pit and the Pendulum,” “The Fall of the House of Usher,” and “The Masque of the Red Death.” While no written proof of such has yet been uncovered, some have speculated that some of Poe’s tales may have been inspired amidst the graves and gardens of Laurel Hill Cemetery. Newly opened when Poe took up residence in the city, the famed necropolis could draw more than 40,000 visitors in one season alone… Surely, Poe could well have been among those curious souls.
This after-hours tour of Laurel Hill will focus on what history has revealed to us of Poe’s time in Philadelphia – on the literature he produced, and the friends, associates and enemies whom traveled within his circles, many of whom now lie at Laurel Hill. With October marking the month of Poe’s passing and Halloween on the horizon, this is a fitting time to summon the stories of the Master of the Macabre. This walking tour will be co-presented by board president and board member of the Friends of Laurel Hill Cemetery, respectively, Carol Yaster and Dr. Dave Horwitz. It will conclude with wine, beer and refreshments, and is not recommended for ages under 21 years. Bring your own flashlights.

Quintessence Theatre Group opens its third season with Shakespeare’s tragedy Othello.
Othello the Moor is the celebrated general of Venice. Virtuous, steadfast and politic, Othello falls in love and impetuously marries Desdemona, a powerful senator’s daughter. Iago, an ambitious subordinate, turns mortal enemy when Othello makes Cassio, an untested scholar of war, his new lieutenant. Reason and passion collide as Iago preys on Othello’s greatest vulnerability, his love for Desdemona. In an electrifying return to the Elizabethan tradition of all-male Shakespeare, Quintessence regulars Khris Davis and Josh Carpenter will lead the ten-actor ensemble. They will be joined by Ross Bennett Hurwitz who makes his Quintessence and Philadelphia debut as Desdemona. Othello plays October 10 – November 4. Post-show discussions with the cast and director will take place on Thursday, October 24 and Sunday, October 28.
