      Astronaut Guy Gardner will talk about what it’s like to fly the Space Shuttle and to live in space, including a video that Mr. Gardner narrates, then briefly he will describe The Williamson Free School of Mechanical Trades. There will be time for Q&A. Guy Gardner has served as an Air Force fighter pilot, test pilot, NASA astronaut, public speaker, NASA and FAA senior executive, public and private high school teacher, consultant, and head of three schools – the Air Force Test Pilot School, Riverside Military Academy, and Williamson. He is a graduate of the USAF Academy (BS), Purdue University (MS), Virginia Tech (MA), and numerous DoD schools. He and his wife Linda have 3 children and 3 grandchildren.       The Mt. Airy Art Garage (MAAG) will hold a preview of all donated artwork for its Sept. 22 Third Annual Silent Auction on Sept. 14-16. MAAG member artists have donated original paintings, sculpture, photography, jewelry, handcrafts, and more.

      All proceeds benefit the buildout of MAAG’s artists’ studios. The Silent Auction will have an array of artwork, gift certificates and handcrafts. Each year the Silent Auction grows in popularity and attracts community members, artists, and art lovers. Come see the array of work and talent of participating artists in our Gallery.

The Teen Center is now open for High School Students on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of every month from 7:30 pm to 10:30 pm. The Center is staffed by a young adult who has his/her clearances. Special Events include: Games, Movies, Drumming, Nintendo Wii, Live music and Open Mic nights. Some Fridays are just TGIF nights to hang with friends. There is free access to the Teen Center with a $25 yearly membership. All teens are admitted with a $5 guest fee charge.

The Marble’s salute to local literary talent returns with three diverse authors reading from and speaking about their latest books. Tea Leaves is a forthright personal memoir in which author and poet Janet Mason reflects on the factory-worker lives of her mother and grandmother in working class Philadelphia while she copes with her mother’s final illness. Guy Dunn’s recently published book, Maybe You CAN Do It Yourself—Quick Computer Fixes For The Non-Geek, is a self-help reference manual which covers a few basic things the average person can do on his or her own to keep personal computers running smoothly. Jewelze was born and raised in Philadelphia.       A Fall Wildflowers and Woody Plants walk in Houston Meadow with Donna Wilhelm will be presented by the Friends of the Wissahickon on September 15, 3 p.m. The reclamation project at Houston Meadow has reestablished a habitat of native grasses, shrubs, and wildflowers, supporting different birds, insects, and animals from those in the surrounding forest. This will be a slow 2-hour stroll on mostly level trails, suitable for adults and children over 8 years old accompanied be a responsible adult. Bring wildflower and other plant guide books, if you wish, a hand lens, water, and insect repellent.       The “All But True” Fiction Series hosted by Doug Gordon will host readings and discussion with Paul Elwork and Kelly Simmons. Admission is free. Paul Elwork will read from his novel “The Girl Who Would Speak for the Dead.” Kelly Simmons will read from her work, “The Bird House.”

      In an era when memoirists, journalists and other nonfiction writers have been accused of stretching the facts, the Musehouse Fiction Series celebrates those who pursue larger truths without pretending to be factual. Some of the region’s best novelists and short story writers will share tales that are stunning, revelatory, visionary. Readings are cheduled for the third Saturday, alternating months. Doug Gordon, All But True series coordinator, is an editor and publishing professional in Philadelphia.
