Chestnut Hill College to Host Conference on Vatican II (all-day)Apr 12 – Apr 14
April 12 – 14
New York Times Religion Columnist Dr. Peter Steinfels To Give Plenary Talk
9601 Germantown Ave.The Religious Studies and Philosophy Department and the Graduate Program in Holistic Spirituality at Chestnut Hill College will host an interdisciplinary conference on “The Irrepressible Energy of the Spirit: Vatican II and Beyond.” Support for the conference provided in part by Commonweal’s Campus Speakers Program.
In the 50 years since Vatican II, not enough has been done to educate the faithful about the deeper meaning behind changes made during that time. Changes were not simply a matter of architecture, but represented a different ecclesiology, one emphasizing the inclusive nature of the gathered community. Vatican II also took important steps in areas like outreach to other religious traditions, the primacy of the needs of the poor and the marginalized, and the role of the laity in the life of the church.
The conference’s purpose is to fill gaps in understanding and knowledge that arise from challenges to the vision and spirit of Vatican II. The conference’s plenary speaker, Dr. Peter Steinfels, co-director of the Fordham University Center on Religion and Culture and New York Times religion columnist, will open the conference speaking on “Vatican II: What Does a Revolution Mean?”
Other distinguished speakers include Dr. Regina Bannan of Temple University, who will chair a panel on Catholic women and Vatican II, and Dr. Bernard Prusak of Villanova University, author of “Turning Point,” an article in Commonweal Magazine based on his experiences working at the Council. Other sessions include topics including catholic education, legacy, contributions, women and dissent, and ethics. For a full schedule of events or to register visit www.chc.edu/vatican.
