8000 St. Martin LaneThe Friends of J.S. Jenks, an independent fundraising organization consisting of parents, teachers, administrators and community members, will host their annual silent auction and reception supporting music, arts and enrichment programs. This year’s theme is “Oh, the Places We’ll Go,” inspired by optimistic spirit of Dr. Seuss, this fundraising event features a variety of auction items from area businesses and organizations.
In addition to the live entertainment, kid-friendly food, appetizers, desserts, and drinks. Children are welcome to participate in games and craft activities while parents bid on auction items. This year’s event will mark the launch of a major fundraising drive to renovate Jenk’s auditorium, transforming it into a modern performance and community space while preserving its historic charm.
The cost is $20 per person; $30 for two and $40 per family. If you’re interested in making a donation of cash, goods, or in-kind services please contact Lauren Wiley at laurenwiley@yahoo.com or 609-937-4860. Northwestern Drive and Forbidden DriveMeet your fitness goals and enjoy the Wissahickon at the same time. The Friends of the Wissahickon (FOW) is offering another free fitness hike in Wissahickon Valley Park led by FOW Trail Ambassadors Gay Bain and Diane Garvey. With sufficient interest, FOW will offer these fitness walks on a weekly basis.
Meet at Northwestern Drive and Forbidden Drive in front of The Cedars House. Make new friends or visit with neighbors as you walk at a pace set by the group. This four-mile hike (two miles out and two miles back) will take place along scenic Forbidden Drive. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water. Walks are cancelled in the event of heavy rain.

The Teen Center located directly across from the Chestnut Hill East Train station is open every Friday night from 7:30 to 10:30 pm for 12-15 year olds. The Teen Center is now open for High School Students on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of every month from 7:30 pm to 10:30 pm. The Center is staffed by a young adult who has his/her clearances. Special Events include: Games, Movies, Drumming, Nintendo Wii, Live music and Open Mic nights. Some Fridays are just TGIF nights to hang with friends. There is free access to the Teen Center with a $25 yearly membership. All teens are admitted with a $5 guest fee charge.

Garden Railway-Around the World in an Afternoon1:00 pm – 3:00 pm

100 E. Northwestern Ave.This summer, Morris Arboretum’s Garden Railway will transport visitors to the far ends of the earth. Spanning the globe, visitors will experience magical visits to The Great Wall of China (China), The Leaning Tower of Pisa (Italy), Hagia Sophia (Istanbul), Tikal (Guatemala) Maachu Picchu (Peru), Petra (Jordan), the Giza Pyramid and Alexandria Light House (Egypt), and The Eiffel Tower (Paris). Grand Opening activities will take place on Saturday.
Take part in a fun kids craft and enjoy free ice cream (while supplies last) beginning at 1 p.m. Visitors of all ages will be wowed by a quarter mile of track featuring seven loops and tunnels with 15 different rail lines and two cable cars, nine bridges (including a trestle bridge you can walk under), and bustling model trains, all set in the lovely winter garden of the Morris Arboretum.
The display and buildings are all made of natural materials – bark, leaves, twigs, hollow logs, mosses, acorns, dried flowers, seeds and stones – to form a perfectly proportioned miniature landscape complete with miniature rivers. Each building, while an exact replica of the original, is unique in its design. Philadelphia-area landmarks such as a masterpiece replica of Independence Hall are made using pine cone seeds for shingles, acorns as finials and twigs as downspouts. Free with admission.

The Urban Athletics classes are a 45 minute high-intensity blend of bodyweight exercises, speed and agility training, dumbbell & kettlebell training and more. Each class is lead by an instructor, taking you through your workout step-by-step, just like personal training without the added cost. This way you don’t have to worry about what you’re workout will be each day, nor do you have to question if you’re doing an exercise incorrectly. There is always a coach on staff to lead you through each workout. The cost is $20.
