Taking a swipe at parking meters
by BOB PREVIDI
Do you wish parking in Chestnut Hill was easier? Tired
of digging for change in your purse or pocket? This week, the Chestnut
Hill District and the Parking Foundation have announced two changes that
will make parking simpler for shoppers on Germantown Avenue.
Work has begun on the installation of an automatic arm at the Highland
Avenue entrance to Lot 7 (across from the Wawa lot). Currently, this lot
is only accessible from a driveway located on Germantown Avenue between
Caruso’s and Joseph A. Bank. This lot is well sited for access to
the stores on the west side of the 8400 block of Germantown Avenue, and
with the opening of the Highland Avenue entrance, we are hoping to encourage
more use.
Customers can simply take the ticket as they normally do at any of the
Parking Foundation lots and give the ticket to the attendant as they leave
at the Gravers Lane exit. Fees are $1 for the first hour and $1 for every
hour thereafter. During the Christmas holiday season, attendants are on
duty from 8:30 a.m. to 5: 30 p.m., Monday through Saturday. After 5:30
p.m. lots are free. For more frequent users, monthly parking tickets are
available.
More good news — we are now selling Philadelphia Parking Authority
Smart Cards at the CHBA office, 8426 Germantown Ave. (next to Caruso’s).
The cards are sold in increments of $25 and can be used throughout the
City of Philadelphia. To use, simply insert and pull out the smart card.
Here in Chestnut Hill, each insertion debits 25 cents and delivers 30
minutes of parking up to two hours. Each insertion of the card elsewhere
also debits 25 cents, and your allowable parking time will increase incrementally
as posted on the respective meter
Chestnut Hill was one of the first communities to recognize the importance
of convenient, adequate parking and organized the Parking Foundation in
1954. In the coming months we hope to announce further changes that will
make Germantown Avenue accessible and attractive to as many shoppers as
possible.
