Mount swimmers succumb to Hatters
by TOM UTESCHER
To celebrate her 16th birthday last Wednesday, Mount St. Joseph Academy
sophomore Jackie Hain reversed the usual protocol and gave some impressive
gifts to the Magic’s swim team. The Norwood Fontbonne Academy graduate
took first place in both the breaststroke and the individual medley, and
was part of winning MSJ quartets in the 200-yard medley relay and the 400
freestyle relay.
Although senior Kristen McCabe and junior Julie Erhart also scored for
the Mount in multiple events, the team depth of meet host Hatboro Horsham
High School carried the day, 102.5 points to 82.5. The Magic (0-2) won
seven of the 12 events, but with more swimmers entered in many of the
races, the host Hatters accumulated points in the lower places and were
able raise their record to 2-0 on the season.
Hain registered winning times of one minute, 12.57 seconds in the breaststroke
and 2:20.18 in the IM, while McCabe won the 100 freestyle in 58.06 seconds
and was runner-up in the backstroke with a time of 1:05.28.
Erhart won the 200 freestyle (2:08.74) and participated in several successful
relay efforts for the visitors. She led off in the 400 free relay, and
Jaclyn Rossetti, Hain and McCabe swam the second, third and anchor legs,
respectively, winning in 4:00.86. Hain went straight into the race right
after winning the breaststroke, the previous event.
“Jackie and Kristen and Julie are physically strong swimmers,”
noted fifth-year MSJ coach Janet Tompkins. “We can rely on them
to swim back-to-back if we need them to.”
Rossetti, a freshman, also placed third in the 50 freestyle (27.82 seconds).
At the beginning of the meet, Hain led off and McCabe anchored the winning
foursome in the 200 medley relay, and junior Athena Diaconis and sophomore
Caroline Menapace swam the middle legs as the Magic touched the wall first
in 1:57.82. Mount senior Kara Lederer outlasted her rivals to win the
500 freestyle in 5:39.04, while Menapace turned in a good individual effort
in the butterfly, where as runner-up her time of 1:05.72 was just two-tenths
of a second off the lead.
In the other relay, the 200 free, MSJ’s Diaconis, Megan Held, Erhart,
and Rossetti came in at 1:51.88 to place second behind the Hatboro Horsham
foursome of Nikki Adlam, Caitlin Haggerty, Mary Connelly, and Julia Holland
(1:48.03). For the Hatters, Holland won the 50 free (26.99), Jessica Healy
won the backstroke (1:04.40) and the butterfly (1:05.52), and Kelsey Tennett
won the diving competition with 164.45 points. In the springboard segment
Mount sophomore Caitlin O’Connell placed third, with 142.80 points.
