CHYSC Friday Night League
by TOM AMODIE

The Chestnut Hill Youth Sports Club Friday Night basketball league began playing for the ’06 season with an abbreviated schedule of games. This year the league has eight teams down from 10 a year ago.

In the opener of the tripleheader the Spurs nipped the Celtics 40-39 as Ben Grant powered in 18 points.

The Celtics led 12-6 after the first quarter as Sam Mercuris drained a three and Justin Berg added five points.

The Spurs cut into their deficit in the second frame as Grant scored six points and Quay Childs tallied four to trail by 23-20 at the break.

The Celtics held a two point lead heading into the final period but in that final frame Grant hit a pair of field goals while Childs picked up four points and Kyle Venson and Bryant Hawthorne each added a field goal. Mike Gibbs buried a three for the Celtics but they dropped their opener by a point.

Gibbs paced the Celtics with 11 points.

In the second game, Noz Wynn was too much for the Suns as the Lakers prevailed 46-34. The loss spoiled a 23 point game for the Suns’ Josh Stevens.

The Lakers led 20-17 at the half but Wynn collected 10 points alone in the third quarter as they opened up a 34-23 cushion and coasted from there. Nick Myrick counted 10 for the winners.

Rahmel Hamilton and O’Shane Black combined for 30 points as the Sixers beat the Hawks 46-33 despite a 21 point game by the Hawks’ Pete Adubato.

The first quarter ended tied at a dozen apiece. In the second stanza Hamilton notched eight points to give the Sixers a 24-18 lead.
