Mixed
financial picture forclassical music community

As local lovers of classical music, opera and ballet
look ahead into the new year, there are many sunny spots but a few
troubling cloudy ones as well. While some of the resident ensembles
are experiencing admirable growth and beneficial development, others
are facing daunting financial challenges.
2005:
The year in film (part one); several trenchant observations

During the past year, I watched over 200 films. Some
left me feeling exhilarated and transformed. Others evoked boredom
and, in some instances, disgust. Here are a few observations, culled
from the time that I spent in darkened theaters.

When Moon and Pat Krapugthong opened Chabaa Thai Bistro
(Chabaa is Thai for hibiscus) at 4371 Main St. In Manayunk in April
of 2005, they were terrified that they might have no customers.

Carver High School of Engineering and Science nor an improved
Kennedy-Kenrick club could keep Mount St. Joseph Academy from
winning the Catholic War Veterans Holiday Basketball Tournament
for the fifth year in a row.

leagues accept area athletes early

Mid-December is when most of the Ivy League
universities answer high school hopefuls who’ve submitted
“early action” applications, and after anxious
hours checking mailboxes and special admissions websites,
a number of area student-athletes recently learned that they’ll
continue their playing careers at the prestigious schools
they’d set their hearts on.
Springside
School splits in holiday tourney

Playing in the post-Christmas
tournament hosted by a Neumann-Goretti High School ballclub
that features three future NCAA Division I players, a realistic
goal for Springside’s hoop squad was to win one of its
two tourney outings.

Devils defeat GFS Tigers in b’ball face-off
by ANDREW LAZOR
The Dec. 20 meeting between Chestnut Hill
Academy and Germantown Friends School proved to be an action-packed
match-up between the inter-conference rivals. The Inter-Ac’s
Blue Devils managed to defeat the Friends Schools League’s
Tigers 49-37 in a game that featured 34 fouls and several
technicals.
