Meals on Wheels needs help, clients
by KRISTIN PAZULSKI
Meals on Wheels, established in 1975, is “one of the most loving
things going on in the Hill,” said Caroline Haussermann, volunteer
and former president of this Chestnut Hill Community Association organization.
Each weekday, the Meals on Wheels’ volunteers arrive at the back
of the Chestnut Hill Hospital at 10 a.m. to deliver meals to the 25 clients
who participate in the program. Most of the clients, according to Haussermann,
pay either the full or partial rate, but others can’t afford to.
“No one is ever turned away for lack of funds,” Haussermann
wrote to the Local.
The weekly rate, for those who pay the full amount, is $27. Each day,
individuals receive a three-part hot meal and soup, and a bag of sandwiches,
fruit and dessert, plus cold beverages of choice. The program delivers
10 meals per week, right to their door daily.
Right now, Meals on Wheels is looking for volunteers to help deliver,
as well as more clientele to receive the prepared meals.
“Mothers used to drop off their kids at school and come volunteer,”
but now many parents work, she said.
Haussermann wanted to make clear that the service isn’t just for
those on low incomes or unable to cook. She said they accept people into
the program who are tired of cooking or temporarily indisposed, or even
someone interested in having someone else cook their meals. Financial
woes are not the single determining factor for this organization, and
they are eager to help any interested. Contact them at 215-248-0660.
The organization “functions thanks to gifts from local contributors,”
said Haussermann. Chestnut Hill Health Care Foundation gave the latest
contribution to Meals on Wheels; the Chestnut Hill Community Association
also supports them.
