Local SportsCurley comeback no fun for CHA booters
Holding a 2-0 advantage with just over four minutes remaining in the finals of their own invitational soccer tournament, the Chestnut Hill Academy Blue Devils were on the verge of upsetting one of the premier teams in the state of Maryland last Saturday. Unfortunately for the home fans, the CHA lead vanished as visiting Archbishop Curley netted two goals in a span of just 28 seconds, and after the 2-2 tie held up through ten minutes of “golden goal” overtime, the Friars claimed victory by beating the Devils, 3-1, in a round of penalty kicks. The Baltimore booters, who had beaten Friends Select 4-0 in one of Friday’s semifinal games, headed back south with a record of 9-0. CHA came away with a mark of 1-2-1, having claimed its first victory of 2007 in a 2-0 decision over Shipley School in the other semifinal match. Shipley won the third-place game on Saturday morning, topping Select 4-1.
Mount sticksters edged by nation’s top team
KINGSTON, PA - With a little over 15 minutes remaining in last Sunday’s field hockey match, a goal by junior Julie Reinprecht pulled visiting Mount St. Joseph Academy into a 2-2 tie with Wyoming Seminary, the team that had received the number one ranking in the United States this fall in the most prominent of the pre-season polls. The MSJ Magic, who’d been placed sixth in that same survey, help out hope of a standoff, or perhaps even an upset of the Lady Blue Knights, but the Wilkes Barre-area team had the last word, winning 3-2 on the third goal of the day by Princeton-bound senior Kat Sharkey. Sharkey’s hat trick, which came with 9:29 to go, helped fashion a 6-0 season record for “Sem,” which is the defending PIAA State Champion in Class AA. The senior standout is just one of three All-Americans on the squad; the others are juniors Devon Gagliardi and Kelsey Kolojejchick.
GFS Boys’ soccer defeats Perkiomen 6-0 On Saturday, September 15, Germantown Friends School boys’ soccer defeated the Perkiomen School 6-0, with each of GFS’ goals being scored by a different player.
Division II trials continue for CHC women’s soccer
Last week seasoned Division II opponents kept cropping up on the soccer schedule for the women of Chestnut Hill College, and last Thursday it was the turn of the visiting Rowan University Profs to show the CHC newcomers the ropes. Outshooting the Griffins 58-0 for the afternoon, Rowan rang up four goals in each half to raise its record to 4-1. Chestnut Hill’s season tally fell to 0-5 with the 8-0 defeat, but at least there was one relatively positive footnote to the match as goalie Kelly Evans finished with 22 saves to set a new school record. “She has hung in there; she’s playing mentally tough and fighting through,” first-year CHC coach Krista Bailey said of her junior netminder. “If you just read the box score, you wouldn’t know how well she’s played. She’s made quite a few saves where she was on the ground after a shot but still got up in time to get to the ball across the net.”
Late goal takes Mount booters past Panthers As the second half entered its final minute in last Wednesday’s soccer skirmish at St. Basil’s Academy, the Athletic Association of Catholic Academies contest appeared headed for overtime.
Springside School tennis tops GFS
Victories in the three singles bouts and at first doubles propelled the Springside School tennis team to a 4-1 victory over Germantown Friends in a match in Chestnut Hill last Saturday. The host Lions, who’d already beaten George School, 4-1, and Springfield High School 5-2 (in a four-singles, three-doubles format), arrived at a record of 3-0. Germantown Friends, who has played all of its non-league matches thus far against challenging Girls Inter-Ac opponents, slipped to 0-5. The Tigers have been hampered by the absence (due to injury) of their number one player, Demi Ieprus. A native of the Republic of Moldova in eastern Europe, Ieprus is a senior who is in her second year at Germantown Friends. Springside, for its part, reconfigured its doubles combinations due to the fact that senior co-captain Merrill Brady and freshman Katie Miller – both pairs players – were out of action last Saturday. The two teams enjoyed the first taste of sunny autumn weather, but weren’t as thrilled with the gusty breeze that accompanied it. The top doubles contest was the first match to finish, with Springside prevailing, 6-1, 6-2. Here, the Lions’ Marissa Rohner (sophomore) and Jill Hardy (junior) took the measure of visitors Alex Selby (junior) and Kiri Nakamura (senior).
