In last Saturday’s Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference soccer doubleheader at Chestnut Hill College, the Griffin ladies fell, 5-0, to visiting Nyack (NY) College, but the second half of the twin bill put the home crowd in a better frame of mind, as the CHC men engineered a 2-1 come-from-behind victory in overtime.

Senior Jeff Lewin tied the men’s game at 1-1 near the end of regulation play, and junior John Wood netted the winner about five minutes into the OT, giving Chestnut Hill its very first soccer victory in the CACC, the conference that the local school joined as it moved up into NCAA Division II this fall.

Earlier last week, the CHC women broke a string of defeats by tying visiting Goldey-Beacom College (Wilmington, DE) 1-1. Griffins junior Tiffanie Stanton scored in the middle of the second half to match a goal scored by the Lightning late in the first period. On Saturday, however, Nyack quickly jumped on top of the Griffins (0-6-1 CACC, 0-11-1 overall), with Alisha Smith and Chauntel Veilleux giving the Warriors a 2-0 lead in the first 29 minutes.

Chestnut Hill had its best scoring opportunity about ten minutes into the second half, when an outside shot by Stanton was blocked, but not held, by visiting keeper Whitney Shutt. CHC senior Debbie Sterns closed in on the loose ball, but Shutt scrambled to recover it just in time.

CHA soccer blanks Episcopal, 3-0

While the Chestnut Hill Academy soccer team has performed well in many aspects, an inability to take advantage of scoring chances has been a disturbing shortcoming for the Blue Devils this fall.

After suffering a 1-0 loss to Delaware County Christian School early last week, CHA appeared to solve the offensive riddle last Friday, pumping in three goals in the first half and then holding that lead against host Episcopal Academy the rest of the way.

“The key is to take pride in how you perform in the final third of the field,” stated Chestnut Hill coach Mark Weinmann, who’d been running his team through extra shooting drills in recent practices. “I think they’re getting hungrier and it’s a good time for it in the league games. On a field like this [small, lumpy, dusty], it’s difficult to get consistent play, so it’s a lot about what you do with the opportunities that occur.”

The 3-0 win upped the Blue Devils’ overall record to 4-6-1, and kept them unbeaten in the Inter-Ac, at 2-0. Episcopal, which had dropped its league opener to Penn Charter, slipped to 0-2 in the league and 7-7-1 overall.

After a quarter-hour of back-and-forth maneuvering in Friday’s session, CHA began to press the attack more vigorously. About 16 minutes in, the Devils sent a ball across the Episcopal goalmouth, but a defender cleared it out for the Churchmen. An EA player tried to head the ball out of harm’s way following a Chestnut Hill corner, but visitor Joe Breen corralled the ball off the deflection and fired in the game’s first goal with 23:10 left in the first half.

OT goal gets Mount past Villa in hockey rematch

Mount St. Joseph Academy, the leader in the Catholic Academies field hockey sweepstakes, laid a 5-0 defeat on second-place Villa Maria out in Malvern last month, but anyone who knows much about the spirited rivalry between these two programs had a feeling that the October 1 rematch between the Magic and the Hurricanes would be a much closer game.

This turned out to be the case in last week’s meeting at the Mount, when the visitors gave as good as they got, and occasionally better, as the standard 60 minutes played out without either team scoring a goal. Three-and-a-half minutes into seven-on-seven sudden-victory overtime, MSJ junior Jen Sabia scored off an assist from sophomore Nicole Schuster to give the host Magic a 1-0 victory. Going in, the Mount was ranked first and Villa Maria seventh in Southeastern PA.

Senior goalie Kieran Sweeney booked eight saves in the game to register her 52nd career shutout as the Mount improved to 12-0 in the AACA and 13-1 overall. Villa sophomore Anna Zackoski, a first-year varsity starter who had gained experience since the first Mount encounter, came up with 13 stops for the ‘Canes (7-2 AACA, 10-2 overall).

Magic claim AACA golf title
by TOM UTESCHER

2007 AACA golf champion Mount St. Joseph Academy. In front of coach Will Reilly are (L-R): Nicole Weinrich, Carson Price, Emily Gimpel, Lauren Haney (captain), Danielle Kouch, Lizzie Walters, Catherine Murphy and Samm Arena.

On the par-35 front nine at Chester County’s Honeybrook Golf Club, Mount St. Joseph Academy cruised to its fifth straight Athletic Association of Catholic Academies championship last Tuesday afternoon.

With freshman Samm Arena leading the way with a four-over 39 and junior Carson Price producing a round of 40, the Magic registered a team score of 209 to win by almost 30 strokes. Villa Maria Academy was the runner-up with a total of 238, and Gwynedd Mercy was a close third at 242.

The scores for all eight Mount competitors at the AACA tourney fell within a relatively tight range. Sophomore Emily Gimpel fired a 42, and was followed by junior Nicole Weinrich with a 43, senior captain Lauren Haney with a 45, junior Catherine Murphy with a 46, and sophomores Danielle Kouch and Lizzie Walters, with a 49 and a 53, respectively.

Late surge falls short for GFS hockey
by TOM UTESCHER

Late in the second half of last Tuesday’s Friends School League field hockey game, the Germantown Friends Tigers put away one goal and were on the hunt for another. Host Academy of the New Church had scored three times earlier in the contest, though, and after surviving the late charge by the visitors, the host Lions (5-3-2, 2-0-1 FSL) claimed a 3-1 victory.
