Sidewalk sale, costume parade bring tricks and treats to the Avenue
by KRISTIN PAZULSKI

There will be trick-or-treating for both adults and kids along Germantown Avenue this Sunday, Oct. 28. From noon to about 5 p.m., many of the shops along the Avenue from Rex to Southampton avenues will display discounted wares in a sidewalk sale.

The sale, organized by Tara Bertholf, owner of Mango at 8622 Germantown Ave., is also part of the Chestnut Hill Business Association’s “Going Purple” month, supporting the Lutheran Settlement House in Germantown, which aids victims of domestic abuse.

Unaware of the purple-themed month approaching in October, Bertholf contacted the CHBA in September because she wanted to do something to support the Lutheran Settlement House in September as a project for a leadership-training course she is taking. She said the CHBA informed her of October’s month-long event, and it turned out to be the perfect opportunity.

Bertholf said about 90 percent of the stores are participating in the sale — others are closed on Sundays. And musicians from the Curtis Institute and local singer/songwriter David Cope are scheduled to perform throughout the day.

“We’re really trying to get the whole community together to have fun, bring people to Chestnut Hill that day, support the Lutheran Settlement House and make some sales,” she said, summing up the purpose of the day.

Linking up with the sidewalk sale is O’Doodles’ annual costume parade. The parade, usually held on a Saturday, will be held both days this weekend, Oct. 27 and 28, at 11:30 a.m. And on Sunday, as part of the sidewalk sale, some businesses along the parade route will have candy for the costumed paraders.

The parade will start at O’Doodles, 8335 Germantown Ave., and proceed to Sovereign Bank at Bethlehem Pike and then back to O’Doodles for more candy and a performance by shop owner Fran O’Donnell on the accordion.
