Those interested in the value of family heirlooms or flea market finds got an opportunity to get their treasures appraised at the antique bazaar held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on Saturday, October 27.  Attendees also were able to acquire new treasures at the bazaar, where the auditorium was full of antiques and food for sale. Grace Epiphany and Rev. Eoyang: made for each other
by JAMES KEOUGH

Grace Epiphany Episcopal Church of Mt. Airy recently found its match in Rev. Thomas Eoyang. Rev. Eoyang, however, is not your typical pastor. And, Grace Epiphany, as he sees it, is not your usual parish.

The pairing of the two, however, is a story that begins during the second Truman administration.

Born in 1951 in New York City, Eoyang was baptized as a youngster in the Episcopal faith and attended parochial school from kindergarten through the sixth grade. He then moved on to Horace Mann High School, where his relationship with the church faltered.

“It was the ‘60s, the ‘70s,” Eoyang said. “I was part of the growing secularism of my generation.” His estrangement from the church would remain in place until his early 40s.

Eoyang went on to obtain his bachelor’s degree in English history and literature from Harvard, and his master’s degree in comparative literature from Stanford. Following Stanford, he began what would be a 20-year career in the publication business as an editor and executive for textbooks and clinical reference books for nurses.

Mount St. Joseph Academy’s field hockey squad launched into the proverbial “second season” last week, locking up its fourth straight Athletic Association of Catholic Academies championships and winning its first game in the PIAA District 1 Class AAA tournament.

Scoring the first five goals of the evening, the Magic continued on to defeat Villa Maria Academy by a 6-2 count in the AACA finals on Monday night. Two days later, they began the defense of their 2006 District 1 championship, hurtling past 17th seed Downingtown West H.S., 7-0, and reaching the 20-win mark with an overall record of 20-1. The top seed for the District 1 playoffs, the Mount saw its quarterfinal bout against number eight Methacton (scheduled for Friday) postponed due to rain.

MSJ star Katie Reinprecht rolled up seven goals in last week’s two outings, while fellow senior Kieran Sweeney, the Mount goalie, recorded her 53rd career shutout in the Downingtown game.

Malvern Prep maintained its stranglehold on the Inter-Ac cross country title last Monday at the league’s 2007 championship race, while meet host Chestnut Hill Academy bucked a recent trend by turning in its best team effort in many years.

Junior Matt McCullough and senior Brian Fulton gave the Malvern a one-two finish and laid the foundation for a convincing 30-51 victory over runner-up Episcopal Academy. It was the Friars’ fifth straight Inter-Ac championship.

CHA senior Ned Cunningham placed third for the second year in a row, and with a team score of 74, the Blue Devils also came in third in the team standings, which longtime coach Paul Hines said was their best performance since the early 1990’s.

What better way to engage an audience than to combine the beauty of Wissahickon Valley Park with the graceful movement of the human body? On a warm Sunday morning in early October, Merián Soto and five other dancers did just that.
