Grace Epiphany and Rev. Eoyang: made for each other
by JAMES KEOUGH

Grace Epiphany Episcopal Church of Mt. Airy recently found its match in Rev. Thomas Eoyang. Rev. Eoyang, however, is not your typical pastor. And, Grace Epiphany, as he sees it, is not your usual parish.

The pairing of the two, however, is a story that begins during the second Truman administration.

Born in 1951 in New York City, Eoyang was baptized as a youngster in the Episcopal faith and attended parochial school from kindergarten through the sixth grade. He then moved on to Horace Mann High School, where his relationship with the church faltered.

“It was the ‘60s, the ‘70s,” Eoyang said. “I was part of the growing secularism of my generation.” His estrangement from the church would remain in place until his early 40s.

Eoyang went on to obtain his bachelor’s degree in English history and literature from Harvard, and his master’s degree in comparative literature from Stanford. Following Stanford, he began what would be a 20-year career in the publication business as an editor and executive for textbooks and clinical reference books for nurses.

CHCA Board: Conditional approvals, profit and personnel
by PETE MAZZACCARO

The Chestnut Hill Community Association Board of Directors covered a lot of ground at an extra-long meeting, Thursday, Oct. 25. The jam-packed agenda included making a rare conditional approval of a zoning variance request for 8623 Germantown Ave., a new personnel committee for the Local, several changes to the board’s makeup (members and officers) and a semi-annual report from the Chestnut Hill Community Fund.

Notes from the CHESTNUT HILL COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION

This past Friday, the Chestnut Hill Community Association hosted a reception at Woodmere Art Museum to thank guests who donated $100 or more to the Chestnut Hill Community Fund Drive last year. Over $70,000 was raised last year and granted to various local organizations. As we prepare for this year’s Annual Fund Drive, we remember the generosity of friends and neighbors who continue to support so many wonderful community initiatives.

The following programs benefited from last year’s Fund Drive: The Bach Festival of Philadelphia, Buckley Memorial Park, CHCA Development Review Committee, CHCA Health Committee, CHCA Land Use, Planning, and Zoning Committee, CHCA Red Cross Blood Drive, Chestnut Hill Garden District Fund, Chestnut Hill Senior Services Center, Chestnut Hill Youth Sports Club, Friends of the Children’s Park (Jenks Playground), Friends of the Fountain Plaza, Friends of the Wyndmoor Train Station, Meals on Wheels, Pastorius Park Free Summer Concert Series, St. Martin’s Station Committee, Teenagers, Inc. and Town Watch.
