Obituaries

Kathryn Giomi

Kathryn Giomi, 77, of Germantown, a teacher of the mentally gifted in the Philadelphia School District for more than 35 years, died Jan. 21, at her home.

Mrs. Giomi had spent most of her teaching career at Cook-Wissahickon School in the Wissahickon section of the city.

She also had been a volunteer with many area groups, including the Ebenezer Maxwell Mansion, the Philadelphia Victorian Society, the Del-Val Fern Society and the Philadelphia Flower Show.

Mrs. Giomi received a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a master’s degree in education from Temple University. She traveled widely and often took courses at Oxford University.

Mrs. Giomi is survived by a daughter, Claudia Giomi, and a brother, Paul Hoffman. Her husband, Evo Giomi, also a public school teacher, died in 2001.

A memorial service was held Jan. 26 at the Church of the Good Shepherd in the East Falls section of Philadelphia. Memorial contributions may be made to the Philadelphia Chapter of the Victorian Society of America, 1175 S. Old Bethlehem Pike, Quakertown, PA 18951-2711.

 

Michael Goutmann

Michael M. H. Goutmann, 69, of Fort Washington, an electrical engineer, died Jan. 16 at his home.

Dr. Goutmann retired in 2001 as vice president of engineering for General Atronics Corporation (now DRS). He also was a teacher at the University of Pennsylvania and an active member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), which named him a Fellow in 1990.

Born in Lyon, France, Dr. Goutmann grew up in Algiers, Paris and Montreal. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his doctorate from Cornell University.

Dr. Goutmann is survived by his wife, Peggy; a son, Peter, and a daughter, Christine.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, at the Craft Funeral Home, 814 Bethlehem Pike, Erdenheim. Friends may call at 10 a.m. Interment will be in St. Etienne de Chomeil, France.
