Obituaries

Gerald W. Edwards

Gerald W. Edwards, 73, of Erdenheim, a retired police officer and service station manager, died Feb. 16 of respiratory failure at Chestnut Hill Hospital.

Mr. Edwards had served as a Philadelphia police officer for three years before joining the Springfield Township police force, where he served for 25 years, retiring at the rank of sergeant.

After his retirement, he was manager of the Flourtown Texaco service station for 12 years.

A native of Tupper Lake, N.Y., Mr. Edwards graduated from Norwood Academy and North Catholic High School. He served in the U.S. Merchant Marines for four years.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Carmella Calisto Edwards; a son, Gerald W. Edwards Jr.; stepsons Joseph, James and John Corley; a daughter, Lucy Wilson; seven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, at St. Genevieve’s Church, 1225 Bethlehem Pike, Flourtown. Friends may call at 9 a.m. Thursday at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association, 527 Plymouth Road, Suite 403, Plymouth Meeting, PA 19462.

 

Mary Kate Cavanagh

Mary Kate Cavanagh, 89, of Chalfont, formerly of Chestnut Hill, died Feb. 14 at Doylestown Hospital.

Mrs. Cavanagh was employed as a meat wrapper for Acme Markets for 30 years until her retirement. Later, she worked as an assistant for a family in Chestnut Hill.

Born in Callow, Ireland, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Mary McNicholas.  She was a graduate of the Callow School.

In Chestnut Hill, she was a member of Our Mother of Consolation Church.

Mrs. Cavanagh’s husband, John, died in 1961.

She is survived by a brother, Harry McNicholas, of County Mayo, Ireland, and many nieces and nephews. Two sisters, Ellen “Eileen” Conway and Deliah McNicholas, and a brother, James McNicholas, preceded her in death.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, in Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Route 152 and Broad Street, Hilltown, Pa. Family and friends may call at the church at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. Interment will follow in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

 

Anne C. Longstreth

Anne Claghorn “Nancy” Longstreth, 87, of Chestnut Hill, a real estate agent, civic activist and wife of the late W. Thatcher Longstreth, a City Councilman and two-time candidate for mayor of Philadelphia, died Feb. 10 of pneumonia at her home.

Despite battling multiple sclerosis for most of her life, Mrs. Longstreth became a successful real estate broker, a Republican committeewoman, a parks advocate, an avid gardener and the mother of four children.

A lifelong resident of Chestnut Hill, she was a great-granddaughter of Justice C. Strawbridge, one of the founders of the Strawbridge & Clothier department store, where she had served as a board member. She was a graduate of Springside School.

Mrs. Longstreth was at her husband’s side in 1955 when he ran unsuccessfully as the Republican candidate for mayor. The following year she was elected a Republican committeewoman in the 9th District, a position she held for 10 years.

Her husband was elected to City Council in 1967 and ran again for mayor in 1971, losing to Frank L. Rizzo. Mr. Longstreth died in 2003.

Mrs. Longstreth was a real estate broker for more than 20 years, and was frequently honored as the top seller in her firm, Emlen and Co.

A strong advocate for the city’s park system, she was a board member of the Philadelphia Parks Alliance. She also volunteered for many charities, among them the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. She was a member of the Garden Club of Philadelphia for 50 years.

Mrs. Longstreth is survived by sons Peter S. of Chestnut Hill and William T. of Seattle, Wash.; daughters Ellen Goodwin of Chestnut Hill and Anne Delay of Omaha, Neb.; 12 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren.
