Chestnut Hill Academy track falls to Friars
by TOM UTESCHER

CHA’s Juian Brown placed first and Malvern’s Tom McGarrigle placed second in the 100-meter dash. For more photos, visit www.chlocalphotos.com. (Photos by Jimmy J. Pack Jr.)

Both Malvern Prep and the host Chestnut Hill Academy Blue Devils were undefeated in Inter-Ac League track meets going into their encounter last Tuesday, and it was the visiting Friars who maintained an unblemished record after topping CHA, 70-52.

Malvern managed to fit in all of its Inter-Ac meets to post a record of 5-0, while Chestnut Hill came away from Tuesday’s tilt at 3-1. Friday’s rain washed out the Blue Devils’ rendezvous with Penn Charter (2-2 league), a meet that won’t be made up this late in the season.

Last Tuesday at CHA, the Devils only lagged behind 40-32 in the individual track contests (including the hurdles), but Malvern enjoyed a greater margin in the field events, scoring 30 points to the locals’ 15. CHA reduced the final gap to 18 points by winning the last event of the day, the 4 x 400 meter relay. Here, Taylor Ferry and Phil Thomas opened up a generous lead for the home team, and Justin Anglin and Marcus Clemons brought it home for an eight-second victory.

Thomas and Ibraheim Campbell each rang up nine points for the Blue Devils by placing in three events. Thomas won the high jump, came in second in the triple jump, and placed third in the long jump, while Campbell garnered a first, second, and third place-result in the intermediate hurdles, the high hurdles, and the 100-meter dash, respectively.

These two, along with Julian Brown, accounted for half of CHA’s team total for the afternoon. Brown was the winner in the 100 meters and the runner-up in the 200.

Malvern runners turned in strong individual performances as well. Three Friars each won two events: Brian Fulton (400 and 800), Matt McCullough (1600 and 3200), and Doug Moppert (long jump and triple jump). Wallace Spencer was first in the high hurdles, second in the intermediates, and third in the triple jump, and Tom McGarrigle won the 200 meters and was second in the 100. Malvern also benefited from a one-two-three sweep in the pole vault.
