Obituaries

Gabriel R. Sauvion

Gabriel Remy Sauvion

Gabriel Remy Sauvion, 86, of Columbus, N.C., owner of a popular beauty salon in Chestnut Hill for 25 years, died May 14 at the Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, Spartanburg, S.C.

Mr. Sauvion was the proprietor of Gabriel’s French Hair Salon at Germantown Avenue and Gravers Lane from 1951 to 1976.

After moving to Columbus in 1984, he worked as a chef at the Highland Lake Inn in Hendersonville, N.C., and later became owner and chef of the Calico Cottage in Saluda, N.C., and co-owner of the Gourmet Kitchen in Hendersonville.

Born in LesArdennes, France, Mr. Sauvion joined the French Resistance at age 16 and served under Charles De Gaulle aboard the battleship Fantasque, which saw action in the Mediterranean and off the African coast.  He came to the United States in 1942 when the ship was refitted.

His first marriage to Madeline Declercq in 1943 ended in divorce. Later he married Mary Friga in 1976.

In addition to his wife he is survived by a son, Joseph, of Elgin, S.C.; three daughters, Carol of Los Angeles, Calif., Joan of Philadelphia and Mariann of New York City; two stepsons, Thomas Seitzinger of Reading, Pa., and George Seitzinger of Lebanon, N.J.; two stepdaughters, Maryann Wherry of Harrisburg, Pa., and Elsa Beystrum of Redlands, Calif.; three sisters, Camille Billebault, Colette Daunay and Josienne Sauvion, and six grandchildren. A son, Marc Gabriel, preceded him in death.

Betty Jane Oldach

Betty Jane Oldach, 79, formerly of Chestnut Hill, died May 10 at the Health Care Facility of Stapeley in Germantown, where she had been a resident for more than a year.

Mrs. Oldach and her husband, William H. Oldach Jr., had lived in Chestnut Hill for 43 years.

She had been an executive secretary at the Leeds & Northrup Co. before retiring to raise her family.

Born and raised in the Fox Chase section of Philadelphia, Mrs. Oldach graduated from the Philadelphia High School for Girls and attended Drexel University.

She was a talented, competitive bridge player and enjoyed sailing on the Chesapeake Bay and the Eastern Shore of Maryland with her husband.

In addition to her husband of 47 years, she is survived by a son, William H. III of Potomac, Md.; a daughter, Elizabeth Oldach Silhol of Vernouillet, France; a brother, Raymond W. Ross Jr. of Glenside, and five grandchildren.

A memorial service was held May 15 at Craft of Erdenheim with the Rev. Dr. Nancy Muth of the First Presbyterian Church of Germantown officiating. Mrs. Oldach had been a member of the church for more than 45 years. Interment was at West Laurel Hill Cemetery.

 

Guntar Berzins

Guntars Berzins

Guntars Berzins, 78, of Erdenheim, former owner of an art gallery and store in Chestnut Hill, died suddenly May 18 while his plane was landing in Philadelphia after a flight from Las Vegas.

Mr. Berzins was the proprietor of Vendo Nubes, an art gallery at 8620 Germantown Ave. that also sold a variety of merchandise and furniture, from 1968 to 1973.

Born in Riga, Latvia, he came to the United States in 1950 and worked for a time as a dental technician. Later he operated art galleries and toy stores. During the past two decades he was a dental consultant for specialty dental products.

He is survived by his wife, Karmen; sons Rudy and Peter, and six grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 23, at the Latvian Evangelical Church of St. John, 301 N. Newtown Street Rd., Newtown Square, PA 19073. Memorial contributions may be made to the church.

 

Loretta Kerper

Loretta Marie Mooney Kerper, 91, of Wyndmoor, died May 14 at her home.

Mrs. Kerper was the wife of the late James J. Kerper.

Mrs. Kerper is survived by sons James, Donald and David; a daughter, Loretta O’Brien; twelve grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her granddaughter Laura and her sister Gertrude.

A funeral Mass was celebrated May 19 at Seven Dolors Church in Wyndmoor and interment was at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Philadelphia, 1 Winding Drive, Philadelphia, PA 19131.

 

Jeanette A. Schaefer

Jeannette A. Gaudlitz Schaefer, 90, of Cathedral Village, formerly of Chestnut Hill, died May 15 at Roxborough Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Schaefer was the wife of the late J. Crosier Schaefer.

She is survived by sons Thomas, James and Mark, and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Friday, May 23, at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, 630 E. Cathedral Road. Interment will be at West Laurel Hill Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Cathedral Village Residents’ Assistance Fund, 600 E. Cathedral Road, Philadelphia, PA 19128.
