Local SportsCHA snaps three game losing streak
The CHA baseball team snapped its three game losing streak with a 7-6 win over Haverford School on Tuesday. Even though the win was sloppy, it was nice for the Blue Devils to get back into the win column. “This was important for us. The season’s not over. We may not have a shot at winning the league title (The Blue Devils actually helped Malvern clinch that honor on Thursday after beating Germantown Academy), but for the pride of the team and for how hard they’ve worked, it is important for us to finish strong,” said CHA head coach Stan Parker. The teams were on the seesaw for most of the game, and it was clear that whoever had the last at-bat was going to win. Lucky for the Blue Devils, they were the home team. After leading through the first three innings, CHA’s momentum was stripped when Brandon Sady gave up a three run homerun to Haverford, and the Fords took the lead 5-3. But CHA did not wilt, and continued to chip away. Even with some mishaps on the basepaths, the Blue Devils managed to tie the game at five in the fifth.
Last weekend at the sprawling spectacle known as the Stotesbury Cup Regatta, Mount St. Joseph Academy’s second eight was playing second fiddle to no one.
GFS girls’ track victory The GFS girls team did not have to sweat as much as the boys did en route to its fifth straight league title. The Tigers got a great team effort and really showed their depth in the victory. GFS won 137-80, and at no moment was the meet in question. This victory gave Germantown Friends 100 Friends League Titles in the history of the school.
Springside silver, CHA bronze at Stotesbury
Springside rowers brought a silver medal home from last weekend’s Stotesbury Cup Regatta, and you couldn’t fault one of Chestnut Hill Academy’s crews for feeling that the medal they won should’ve been struck from silver, too. A strong second place not far from the finish line, the Blue Devil Junior quad became involved in a collision with another boat and wound up in third to take the bronze. The successful junior quad from Springside, which had won the gold medal at the Jersey championships and had taken silver at the Philadelphia City Championships, added a Stotesbury silver to its collection. The Lions’ quartet of Jenn Arcidiacono (stroke), Katherine Roberts, Katie Fitzkee, and Kelsey Trueblood posted the second-fastest time in the qualifying head races, won their semifinal heat, and then came in second in the finals behind local rival Conestoga and ahead of boats from Virginia and Maryland.
